Although it was filmed in Newhall, California for most of the car driving scenes. I just went through there today

The filmed at least the pilot in Georgia (in fact, they actually drive into Atlanta in the pilot) but then moved to California as it was a lot cheaper.

And they filmed the first six episodes in Conyers, GA (about 25 miles from Atlanta by Interstate). You can really tell a difference when they moved to California- Georgia doesn't have any land that looks like most of what they show on the series.

That's right, I should have remembered it was Conyers where they also shot "In the Heat of the Night". Conyers is a little to the SE of Atlanta but is too far out to really be a suburb.
