Weird little creations...

Just a quick post to officially say hi to everyone

         "hi to everyone" :p

and to gloat.

I recently became a full-time grad student (which is not what I’m gloating about); I finalized my plans to take a one year leave of absence from teaching, and suddenly realized that all of the papers I had built up being a part-time grad student needed to be organized. But the problem is that the papers are stapled in bunches that are way too thick to be hole-punched by anything I own. So I built a weird little creation to guide me as I drill through an inch of papers at a time. It’s really just a couple of pieces of board with spacing guides and pre-drilled holes in the right places. It’s ugly, made from scrap, and awkward to store, but, man, does it feel good to punch through all those pages at once.

So I want to know: Am I alone? Am I the only one who would even dream of building something so bizzarrely overkill? Please show me that my faith in the teeming millions is not misplaced.

That’s quite cool, actually. I don’t think I’ve made anything that elaborate, except for one of these to get a better signal for my wireless receiver.

Not me personally, but my friend’s dad built a pneumatic and hydraulic aluminum can crusher

I don’t have anything on-topic to add, but I just wanted to welcome you after seeing the message in the Naked! Naked! Naked! thread in which you said:

Hmmm, shouldn’t that be “fewer than three replies”? Or, to be numerically as well as grammatically correct, “fewer than four”, at least for now…

I bought 10 yards of topsoil last year. After 10 regular wheelbarrow loads I realized I needed something bigger. So I built the big wheelbarrow. Everything I used was scrap stuff I had accumulated. It has become a popular item to borrow among my neighbors.

I don’t know if it counts, I am 75% done on a 10’ long, all wooden SeeSaw for my kids.
Otherwise, I built a custom bench to fit in my yard cart so I could drive my kids around the backyard, pretending it is a Train. My 5 year old son this Thomas the Tank Engine is “Totally Awesome”.
