Who makes Sears Lawn tractors?

Well, two hours after I drove my old lawn tractor out to the front of the house with an "I'm Free" sign on it someone had called and will take it away tomorrow. I think he plans to have the PTO fixed, but I am sick of the thing and wanted a new one. Trying to compare prices, I find Sears reasonably priced but do not know who makes them, and either did the sales person. Does anyone know so I can do some research as to quality, durability, etc.?

Former Sears Lawn and Garden employee here. We were told that they are made in the USA, in Arkansas, IIRC. We were also told that virtually every lawn tractor made here is made at that same factory, no matter whose label ends up on it. YMMV.

A quick poke around Google shows that American Yard Products makes Craftsman mowers, and AYP also manufactures equipment for Poulan and Weed Eater.

Consumer Reports oughta have a back issue on lawn mowers somewhere. Check with the Reference Librarian at your local public library.

Do Craftsman mowers have the same lifetime warranty the tools have? If so, that could be a reason right there to buy.

No. Lifetime warranty applies to hand tools only, and there are some exclusions. Most of their torque wrenches, for example.
