So I am reading the sports page of todays The News & Observer, Raleigh's daily paper. The front page has the headline, "Closing Ceremonies for the Sydney Olympics will be a drag for some." Sure enough, a Christian politician in Australia, the Rev. Fred Nile, is complaining because they are going to have a couple of guys in drag at the closing ceremonies in a celebration to acclaimed Aussie films - in this case, The Adventures of Priscilla.

Then I turn to the next page and see a news item with the headline "Dodgers Apologize to Lesbians."

It seems that the Dodgers ejected a lesbian couple for sharing a kiss at the stadium. They were initially not even told why they were being escorted out of the stadium, but later were told that someone complained and said children should not be exposed to "those people."

Aside from apologizing, the club is donating 5,000 tickets to three gay & lesbian organizations and promise the usual "sensitivity training."

All of this in the sports section.

I just wish that someone would tell all of the sports fans who are homophobic and the dumb organizations who would react in stupid ways to these complaints that half of the music that is played at sporting events is by a group which had a gay lead singer who cross-dressed at least once in a while.

"We are the champions?" Doesn't seem that way...

I've long thought it was time for the Olympics to get back to basics - athletes stripping naked and working up a sweat. And then if they all want to put on posh frocks and high-heels for the closing ceremonies, I only wish i could be there to party along. Good show, Sydney!

Hrm... how about running the 50 meter dash in a dress and highheels! Now THAT'S an event that'll test your endurance!

And once they're done hearing THAT story, we can tell them the truth about Gary Glitter, too!

Oh, they must have been ugly lesbians. Had they been of the lipstick/high-heel/Howard Stern variety, I'm sure the guy who complained would have instead bought them season tickets.

All the stadia in this area have stopped playing Rock 'n Roll, Part II. I think I read somewhere that other arenas are also taking that song off the playlist as they hear the story.

So long as they comply with equality of the sexes, I wholeheartedly second that notion.

Of course, then women's gymnastics would stop being kind of neat to watch and just become vaguely dicomforting.

Nope.

I can’t find any articles that reference local teams specifically, but here’s an article that talks about removing the song from the lineup at hockey games in Canada. I haven’t heard it at a Jets game for a season and a half or so, or at a Rangers game (to be fair, they rarely played it anyway). A friend with Giants tickets reports the same thing.

Not to hijack, but . . .

Oh, what the hell, it's a hijack.

What's up with Gary Glitter, and why're they not playing his song anymore? I like that song . . .

Satan,

Just be thankful you don't have to read Melbourne's right wing newspaper, the Herald-Sun. We've had such classic headlines in the last week as 'The Drag Olympics'. I have to give them credit for this following one though: in relation to a report that the Aboriginal flag was not going to be allowed into the stadium, olympic organisers backpedalled and said that's not what they meant, blah blah, and the H-S put up the headline 'Black Flag Welcome' - I should send that one to Henry Rollins

BTW, Fred Nile is Australia's resident right wing religious nut, who most other right wing nuts laugh at.

phouka, Gary Glitter, it would appear, is what our U.K. friends quaintly refer to as a pederast. He was sentenced last November to a four-month prison sentence in England for possessing a large quantity of downloaded child pornography. He also was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year old girl, but was cleared of the charges.

FTR, Freddie was bisexual. He had many relationships with women. Not that it matters all that much. I just wanted to set the record straight.

While we're hijacking...

I spent the last 2 weeks away at summer camp and while I was there, my job included serving as sound technician during all of the major Color War events.

Now, this is no small camp, so these events meant that over 1000 children (8 - 18) and their counselors were packed into the gym each evening for the 3 day color war. My job was to keep the show moving, pump up the crowd, etc.

Which songs were the biggest hits this year? YMCA and Macho Man. You aint' seen nuthin' until you've seen 1000 kids rockin' and rollin' to the Village People.

"Body, body... can you feel my feel my
Body, body... It's so HOT so HOT my..."
