That’s right folks, I must be on the 'A-list" now! I got to see a special presentation of Deep Sea 3D before it’s been officially released! Wooo-yeah! The perks of being an Oceanography Student have NO bounds!
coughcough, <ahem> :o
Well, anyway… I did get to see the movie, and it was FRICKIN’ AWESOME! The 3-D effects were mind-blowing! When the squid attacked the camera, I flinched like I was tryin’ to push my shoulders through the seat two rows behind me!
Usually, I don’t worry too much about catching a movie in the theaters, but, if you have any interest at all in fishies/ocean stuff, go see this movie! Even if you’re not an ocean-geek like me (I’m physical oceanography, btw, not biological), the cinematography was outstanding!
Ok, enough raving (and exclamation marks !!!1!!!11!!!eleven!!!) , want to ask me question about Deep Sea 3D? If you do ask me questions, be prepared to get both an oceanography response and a personal response. Oh, and I will use spoiler boxes.
I know it’s an “Ask the…” thread, but due to its subject matter and the conversation likely to ensue, it really belongs in Cafe Society. I’ll move it there for ya’.
Wow, as someone with a pathological fear of ocean life, especially whales, this sounds like the movie most guaranteed to give me a fatal stroke. It sounds like the sort of thing that most people would think was cool, though. Is it a documentary?
I could easily see someone getting totally squicked out by this film. But, damn, the 3-D effects were spot on.
One of the first scenes was being in a cloud of jellies. (And, yes, I had a “Finding Nemo flashback.” ) I can’t even image how optical effects can get any better than that.
Yes to “Is it a documentary?”, but there is honestly no main theme other than “ain’t this stuff cool.” As an intro to coastal reef life, it still gets an A+ in my book.
I’m glad it’s good, even if I will never, ever see it. Is it appropriate for kids, or too scary? I know some who might be interested if it’s not too intense. Demonstrating how awesomely cool nature can be seems like a good way to spend an afternoon with a kid. Or alternatively, a way to give them a crippling fear of ocean life!
Heh. I will freely admit (for this one time only) that slimy, squishy things in the ocean give me the screaming heebie jeebies. (See, there’s a reason why I’m in physical oceanography…)
However, for me, the total “cool-ness” of the movie completely out-weighed most of the ick factor. But, like I mentioned earlier, there was that one scene…
I did see more little kids than I thought I would, btw. I think that, like any nature documentary, kids will be fine, if brought in with the right frame of mind. (I overheard one parent reminding a child before the movie, that, if the kid gets scared, they could close their eyes and hold on to mommie.)
Oh, and did you say
that you don’t like whales? Would it freak you out if one were closer than a meter and staring at you? If so, you may not want to go…)
In regard to your “spoiler”: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Yeah, that would bother me.
I don’t get why more people aren’t freaked by aquatic life. The ocean is basically just a giant hiding place for all kinds of monsters who could just pop out any second and, you know, look at you. MONSTERS. HIDING!
I realize it’s irrational, but I’ve been terrified of them since I was a toddler. Even drawings of whales send me into near-hysterics. My husband and I collect comic books, and he has to pre-screen them all and cover any whales with Post-its. I do not read Aquaman.
For the millions of not-crazy people who love whales and jellyfish and all that stuff, I’m really glad this kind of movie exists. Nature is awesome, except for all the monsters. If it was all about lions and birds and bunnies, I’d be all over it.
Actually, I can see pictures or film of jellyfish and be okay. It’s the whales that get me. However, I’ve been stung badly by jellyfish, but never bitten by a lion.
Back to the topic at hand, I can’t wait to see this movie- another doper and I are going next week, probably Tuesday and I"m really looking forward to it.
One question- how was it in 3D? Did it make you at all sick? (the 3D part, not the action itself).
I’m very excited for this. I will probably see it more then once, especially since I plan to learn to snorkel and scuba this year. Woo!
Oversized, alternate direction polarized “sunglasses.” When I say “oversized,” I mean “each lens larger than the palm of my hand.” Putting them on, I couldn’t help but think “I’m… too sexy./ I’m… too sexy./ I’m… too sexy for this film.” But that might just have been me.
As for getting sick, things did get… a little wierd, if I moved my head too quickly. You certainly can “pan and scan.” Just don’t go to fast with it.
By the way, have I mentioned how amazingly crystal frickin’ clear the movie is?
