Tivo: No More Lifetime Subscriptions

Tivo has discontinued offering lifetime subscriptions to new subscribers. Instead they have gone to the dish model, by giving away the box in exchange for a commitment of pre-paid monthly service. I think my series 1 with a lifetime subscription just went up in value, although I have no plans to sell.

Be careful...they might be sending Jack Bauer to find all you remaining "lifetime members" in order to cut their loses.

Is there any reason anybody would pay for Tivo rather than using a free DVR?
