Cost of dental implant
My left maxillary incisor, the one next to the midline has had two root canals, a crown, and now the crown has fallen off. The dentist says there is not enough tooth left to redo it and recommended an implant. I believe him. However, he said the preparation for the implant, which I assume is removing all original tooth material and sticking in a screw is $3,500 and the crown itself is another $3,500. This seems way way high. Does this sound right, or should I get a second opinion?

Get a second opinion regardless. You're contemplainting surgery, after all - a second opinion is always a good idea.

I agree with a second opinion, always.
I had three molars implanted a couple of years ago. Total cost was about $6,500 (midwest if location makes a difference.) That included inserting three screws and two crown thingies - one lower double molar and a single upper one. IIRC the largest proportion of the bill was the bone drilling and screws, the crowns were a little over $2,000 for all three. |

The implant cost sounds about right, the crown way too high. I have one and it ran about the same for the implant and $1100 for the crown and the abutment (which connects the crown to the implant).

So, $6K, not so far off after all. |

Before committing yourself to a dental implant, ask whether it's guaranteed to be permanent. If they say yes, don't believe them.

I'm in the Hudson Valley area of New York. Yesterday I drove my pal to have two front teeth extracted. I found a brochure for just this thing- dental implants. I asked her if she was going to do it.
She said that this particular practice got $ 2, 500.00 a tooth and she didn't have five g's for dental work. She's going to have to work with an appliance instead. Pricey work, this. |
