As per the title, it’s pretty much a self-explanatory thread. Granted, we’ve had previous Café Society discussions on album art, namely Reeder’s Best album covers and astro’s “The covers they didn’t want you to see” - but none I could find about those eyebrow raising coincidences or unsubtle references to original album art.
Here are links to 6 covers that come to mind (original on the left) – I’m all but certain there are countless others.1). The Beatle’s Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band & Mother’s of Invention’s We’re Only In It For The Money – A spoof(e) as opposed to homage. (For extra credit, In 1977, Jun Fukamachi‘s electronic version of Sgt. Pepper’s put a new face on the concept. There was also an early 80’s punk compilation that used the Sgt Pepper’s layout too – but I can’t recall the title off the top of my head).===========================================================2). Speaking of the Fab 4, you probably recall your first copy of Meet The Beatles – But did you ever Meet The Residents?[*]This definitely is no koincidence: The Kink Kontroversy & Sleater-Kinney’s Dig Me Out.===========================================================3). Q: What does a pub rocker do when a more vastly more popular artist like David Bowie releases Low? Truncate the –e in his last name and release Bowi.===========================================================4). By 1956, Elvis Presley had more than enough assets to smash his acoustic guitar – but it took the Clash 23 years to finally getting around to doing it on London Calling.===========================================================5). On one EP, Big Black’s The Model pays homage to Kraftwerk’s Mensch Maschine and it’s the A-Side; He’s A Whore, is an obvious call out to Cheap Trick. Fortunately for late 80’s hardcore fans, they didn’t reproduce either sound.===========================================================6). Klaatu’s 3:47 EST & Sublime’s 40 Oz. To Freedom: They’re similar – but from what I can tell; that’s strictly a coincidence. So, fellow doper(s, any links to albums you wanna add? (Remember, in the case of linking, preview is your friend).
