The Compact

A friend of mine, trying to be helpful, pointed me towards a group called The Compact, whose mission is to go a whole calendar year without buying anything new, with a few exceptions like food and some other consumables. And for those items to buy local. Otherwise they buy used, trade or borrow.

Basically it's "reduce, reuse and recycle" taken to an extreme.

I can handle the buy local, because I try to do that anyway. But a whole year with new boots, a new kitchen gadget or a new book? I don't think I could make it a month. Have you ever tried to unplug from the consumer grid? Could you? It might be fun to try, even.

On the other hand, what would happen to the economy if significant numbers of people did this?

Their blog is here and they have a yahoo group.

I've shopped at thrift stores for clothing - but not shoes and I treat myself to books every other payday so I don't think I can do it. Really great idea as far as recycling goes - the effect on the economy - have to think about it.

Hmmm...interesting concept. We're not rabid consumers by any means. We're pretty good at using our "stuff" until it dies. I don't want to make it sound like I don't buy stuff, because I do, but we're not the couple to "keep up with". We have a regular TV, an old stereo, don't buy stuff for the house all that often, and I'm not a clothes horse (even less so than before, since I work at home). Both our cars are old.

I think buying local is great. We've always tried to do that. I think the economy would suffer if lots of people did this, but at the same time, we're too "stuff" oriented as a nation, and a concentrated effort to lessen that attitude is probably a good thing.
