1/666 is not the common denominator of the beast, it’s the reciprocal of the beast. 666 can’t have a common denominator on its own - there must be some other number for it to have a denominator in common with. Sorry, that’s been bugging me.

As a side note, this particular staff report seems to be getting more comments on the jokes to do with the number of the beast than on the actual investigation itself. Tells you something about us Dopers, I guess.

And another thing - I’ve seen people commenting on this report before it was live… and posts saying “it’s talking about this report, which will be available on 4th April”… where are these people reading the reports before they’re published?

There’s a link on the front page to subscribe to the Straight Dope mailing list. This is a mass e-mail that goes out on Thursday evening or so, and includes the first paragraph or so of the coming New Column, Classic Column, and Staff Report, along with links to the full thing. And before you say anything about mass e-mails, they’re entirely opt-in (and I presume opt-out, though I’ve never tried), entirely voluntary, and pure text (so no obnoxious banner ads or scripting tricks)
