Or, wait… That was quicksand, right? I can’t remember.
Hard to believe true quicksand in the middle of a desert – quicksand is sand supported by an upwelling of water of sufficient force to counter the gravitational force, and so it requires the presence of a spring, or something like it. Of course, you can get stuck in things like mudholes, clay pits, tar pits, and (for all I know) sand pits where there’s some tendency to hold onto you tenaciously, or maybe a pit or gap in the sand. I really don’t understand what happened in Lawrence of Arabia,; it seems like, once you hit the bottom of whatever, you could start to dig your way out. I suspect it wasn’t realistic. In any event, they used the same thing in the Brendan Fraser The Mummy. And there were those Pits of Despair in The Princess Bridge.
As for what was supposed to be “real” quicksand, they had it in one of the circa 1960 Tarzan movies – I think Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure] ( Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959) - IMDb )
the Mummy
To be pendantic, it was lightning sand in Princess Bride. And the Pit of Despair was a clever device in the book that was severely watered down in the movie, but in essence in both versions was Humperdinck’s violent hunting and torture playground, built underground.
Oh my. Pedantic, not pendantic. I’m not trying to be a necklace bauble.
Blazing Saddles
The Horrors of Spider Island, an MST3K flick. There’s a great riff about how the “monster” (a “spider man” with the face of a human, the hands of a human, and the body of a human) is drowning in Coco Wheats. Made funnier by the fact that I was eating them at the time.
The Neverending Story.
I was five or so when I saw that movie. That scene scarred me for life, I tell you.
In 98% of all Tarzan movies.
Also, Bing & Bob encounter it on The Road To Zanzibar, I do believe.
A bump to a zombie thread.
What with the interest in old movies in the past few days, I was going to mention some of these movies in one or more of those threads. But maybe we can zoom in on this specific feature for anything new worth mentioning.
The Phantom Menace
One-stop browsing for all your quicksand movie needs.
Radiolab did a piece on quicksand not too long ago. ISTR that there turned out to be quicksand fetishists… not entirely surprising.
An old classic: “The Hallelujah Trail”
(If you haven’t seen it: possibly the best Donald Pleasance role ever !)
Kalifornia (1993) - song featured: “Unfulfilled”
Empire Records (1995) - song featured: “Thorn in my Side”
Beavis & Butthead (the TV series) also featured the videos for “Delusional” and “Dine Alone”
I could’ve sworn that “Freezing Process” was featured in a movie soundtrack, but IMDb doesn’t list that one.
^^
Almost got me.
In reply to the OP, every B-movie that took place in the jungle. I remember it as one of the most cliche-ed of cliches.
I’m sorry?
Quicksand is also the name of a band. Their music has been featured in those shows.
Out of sight! Thanks for the info. I’m too dumb to get the reference.
