Farewell Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper

May 10, 1920 - Sept 25, 2006, died peacefully at home.

Jeff Cooper - father of the modern technique of handgun shooting, author, and believer that “there are more good men than evil”

Front sight, press. May he rest in peace.

Oh man. He was a great read on so many different topics–and he shot straight from the hip too.

My action is open in mourning tonight.

Condition 1, Colonel. The 4 are always with me. God Speed.

Damnit. I hate to see the good ones go. I can’t count the number of his articles I’ve read.

Crap.

Reading Coopers backpage columns in Guns and Ammo was a huge part of my childhood firearms experiance. As mentioned in the thread about what guns we would get if money was no issue I mentioned my lifelong desire to aquire a Steyer Scout, a rifle I read about in theory and then saw developed into an actual working medium use hunting rifle all based on his input and articles.

Truly an awesome presence in the world of firearms has passed on.

For anyone who is unaware, his column in Guns & Ammo, at least during the years I read it, was an abridgment of his “Cooper’s Commentaries” which were put on the Web at several sites including this one: Link

Thanks for the link! I haven’t read the Colonel for years, but I fondly remember reading his columns when I spent summers working on my great-uncle’s farm.

I give partial credit to Col. Cooper’s lessons in helping me to outshoot a USMC firearms instructor on November 5th, 1998, one of my favorite days of my life.

He was my favorite gun writer. His book The Art of the Rifle taught me how to shoot.

RIP, Jeff.
