Yesterday I had a Vision Membrane phakic intraocular contact lense implanted into my right eye. In 2 weeks I’m getting the left eye done. I had 20/200 vision in my right eye yesterday and today I have 20/25 vision. Ask away.
Hope they work out for you
I know that I am not a good choice for lasic because I am astigmatic and the doc warned me that it would probably make the rays around lights at night worse than they are … is there any issue like that possible? If it isnt too personal, roughly how much are you paying? What warnings were you given [like the light rays and such with lasic]?
I’m paying cica $4200 (the same as LASIK), but that’s because I’m one of the first 5 people my opthomologist is doing. Otherwise it’d be twice that.
I presume you are under 40. I hope they told you that when you are 40 you will still need reading glasses. Same with Lasik.
Regis Philbin just got his done, and they tried to tell him that “monovision” would make it OK. It doesn’t, as he discovered to his regret.
I know as well, the hard way.
alphaboi867, I’m VERY interested in hearing how this works out for you. I’m also excited for you. I get happy whenever anyone gets a life-changing eye thing done. Please start a new thread about it or resurrect this one after you’re a few weeks post-op in both eyes. The practice I work for is not doing this sort of procedure yet, but we are seeing amazing things with intraocular lens implants for cataract patients. Some patients are starting to get the implants without even waiting for cataracts. It’s called “clear lens extraction”.
You should absolutely be told that readers will be necessary when presbyopia sets in, AND that monovision doesn’t work for everyone. At our office, the doctors will insist that you attempt monovision with contact lenses before you even consider it with LASIK.
aruvqan, lots of people with astigmatism have LASIK, and with relatively good results. Of course, if your astigmatism is very high, then, yes, it’s not the way to go. I have a contact lens patient with 6 diopters of astigmatism, and she is considering LASIK to have some of the astigmatism taken out. She is fully aware that she would definitely need eyewear afterwards, but she’s still considering it, because contacts are very hard to get for her, and glasses, aside from making her eye look slanted weirdly, just don’t provide the acuity and comfort that we all deserve. If she could even have her astigmatism decreased by half, it would make glasses and contacts easier to deal with.
Does it stay in there permanently? Does your eye feel normal?
It’s meant to be permanent, but it is possible to remove them (unlike LASIK which is irreversable). I’m 21 and I was told it’s likely I’ll need glasses in my 40s, but hey that’s 20 years without glasses and who knows what’ll be on the market then. Contacts were never an option for me. I tried them, but in 3 months only managed to actually put them in my eyes without help once. With LASIK I’d still need to wear glasses afterward. And my eye feels completely normal. My only problem so far is that I keep reaching up to readjust my glasses .
Ha, I have worn contacts for many years, and I finally got some glasses that I really like so I have been wearing them (the glasses) every day. When I first started wearing them, I would try to take them off when I got out of the car, because the only glasses I wore in the car were sunglasses, and I took those off when I left the car. It amused me and I laughed at myself.
Have you stabbed yourself in the eye with your finger yet? I do that every time I go without my glasses for an extended period of time. Go up to adjust the glasses at the stems, and my hands slides right past and into my eye.
What made you choose this over LASIK?
My eyes were so bad I wasn’t even a candidate for LASIK.
As requested I’m resurrecting this thread as requested by WishIHadACoolName. Yesterday I had my left eye done. It doesn’t “feel” like anything. I’ve gone from L 20/200 and R 20/220 to L20/20 and R 20/25. Of the 2 (& a half) procedures my opthomologist has done so far I’ve gotten the best results. I’ve also gottent he best results the company reps have ever seen too.
What, specifically, made your eyes “so bad”? I’ve heard of people with far worse vision that were able to get Lasik.
