What is your morning routine?

I have realized I have a pattern. As I head for bed, I know I will do the same thing tomorrow that I did today. Here is my morning routine:

Set the alarm for 30 mins before I have to leave the house. The alarm goes off, I get out of bed, and go to the spare bedroom. I have the alarm in there set for five minutes before I must leave the house. I lay down and doze, sometimes sleep until that alarm goes off. When it does, I dress for Physical Training, grab my wallet, cell phone, and car keys (all laid out in place the night before). I go to physical training, get a ten minute nap in the car before it begins, and proceed to PT. When that is done, I invite Robin Meade into my home and my bedroom as I catch up on the news, maybe doze for half an hour before I shower. Get cleaned up, and go to work.

So what is your morning like?

Sgt Schwartz

I am a very punctual guy. . . it's a pet peeve of mine when I'm late. Anyway, here goes:

0550, First alarm goes off. Hit snooze, sleep in for an extra ten minutes. (I have a Bose Wave Radio, which snoozes for ten minutes, and not the usual nine. )
0600, Second alarm goes off, fiancee whaps me in head to turn it off. I get up. Hit shower, shave.
0620, Out of shower, gettin' dressed/packing gym bag/packing lunch.
0630, Pouring coffee/dressing/packing/whatever is left.
0645, Kiss fiancee. Leave for work. Listen to NPR or country on the way in. . .
0700, Arrive at gate for work, wait in line, show badge, pass through base gate.
0705, (approx) Park truck, get up to office. Unlock office, start coffee.
0710, Start readin' e-mail.
0730, Boss walks in, I'm still reading e-mail
0750ish, Bat-shit insane cowerkin' secretary* calls up, and in Southern drawl swears "the traffic is just crahysee tohdayy. . . Aahhl be in in twehnty minutes. . ." I get her off the phone as quickly as I can so I can get back to work and get stuff done before B-SICS* actually arrives.
0830ish, B-SICS actually shows up. The demon has arrived in my office, and Beelzebub grins. I contemplate just which fifth I'm going to buy at the liquor store that day.

Tripler
Oh, don't worry. A Pit thread on B-SICS is forthcoming. . . soon.

Wake up, get out of bed, drag a comb across my head.

Seriously?

Alarm goes off at 5:15. I hit snooze until between 6:30 and 6:45 depending on how many adult beverages I've had the evening before. Get up and go to the bathroom and read on the john for a while. Take shower, and then (In this exact order) deoderant, hair stuff, mouthwash, brush teeth, shave. Get dressed except for shoes, check the Dope, put on shoes, get in the car between 7:15 and 7:30. Smoke two cigarettes on the way to work, park car, go inside and get started on my day.

I have a much more relaxed morning routine.

Wake up when I feel like it.* Get up...if I feel like it; sometimes I read a while in bed first. Get up, perform quick ablutions. Stumble into the kitchen. Make coffee (unless whiterabbit has beat me up and already has it made). Turn on computer and pet dogs while coffee is dripping. Drink coffee. Surf Dope. When enough caffeine has hit the bloodstream that my brain starts functioning, start working.

*In my defense, I'm self-employed, so I stay up working very late most nights. And I don't have to punch anyone's timeclock so I work the hours I prefer. Which include late at night and do not include early mornings.

Alarm goes off at 5:40. Hit snooze until sometime between 6:30 and 6:50. Get up. Shower. Dress. Comb hair and drink a glass of water while reading online comics until 7:20. Put on shoes. Grab a cereal bar to eat for breakfast on the drive to work. Grab purse and cell phone. Drive to work. Park car. Stay in car listening to the radio until the last possible minute before going inside to start work.

Right now it's largely dependent on how long the baby lets me sleep. In 3 weeks, I will be going back to work, and then the fun will begin. I am hoping it will go something like this:

6:30: Get up & feed baby.
7:00: Shower & get myself ready
7:30: Get 3-year-old up, dressed, and fed breakfast
8:00: Start getting everyone packed into the car
8:15: Leave for 1-hour commute
9:15: Drop off at daycare &/or preschool (some days I'll have one drop-off, some days I'll have 2)
9:30: Arrive at my desk

Of course, the baby is the wildcard. Hopefully, he will be happy to eat at 6:30, and not want to eat again until 9:30ish. If he won't work with me on this schedule, I'm going to have a tough time.

Alarm set for 1 PM. Hit snooze twice to 1:18. Get up, brush teeth, get hair wet, get dressed, check email.

1:25 grab cell phone, keys, wallet. Toss work uniform shirt in backpack (I don't like being seen as security out of work. No need to help along the burger spit)
1:30 out the door. Get to work at 1:50. Start work at 2PM.

Either
- wake up insanely early (thanks, PMS) - in which case, get up, make & drink a hot choc, maybe surf for a bit, if lucky, get sleepy again and go back to bed for another hour or two
- wake up shortly before the alarm
- wake up when the radio comes on (7 am) - maybe listen to the news or, if I'm really tired, zonk back out until the alarm goes off
or else - turn the radio off before I go to bed because I know I'll want to sleep until the last chance alarm at 7:30

I get up and trundle out to my desk, where I'll check my email and board(s) and wait until consciousness occurs. Eventually the fog clears and I eat breakfast - usually whole-grain toast and chocolate milk. I need to eat more fruit and this would be the time to do it but I don't feel fruity in the mornings. I might put a coffee on if I feel like one. Eat and poke about on the computing machine. Around 8 I need to start getting ready so I go scrub self and dress. I'll either have started the coffee at home or I'll put it in a travel mug to take with me. Then I fill my water bottle from my Brita, get my stuff, and head out for my walk to work.

Two words someone would never use to describe me: Morning Person.

Depends when I'm teaching (and on some days, when I have to leave in order to have parking when I teach three hours later). A typical early parking day:

6:00 Alarm rings
6:15 Get up, dress, bathroom
6:30 Inhaler. Onto the treadmill, with a book
7:00 Shower
7:15 Breakfast
7:30-7:40 Leave the house
7:45-7:55 Arrive at work

On a morning when I don't have to be up early (or when I'm teaching afternoon and night classes), I might stay up until midnight, sleep until 8-ish, and (in the summer) do some gardening or yardwork in addition to the other stuff.

Typical "early" day when my husband and I rideshare:

7:30 hit the snooze button
7:39 roll out of bed and try to remember where the hell I put my glasses.
7:40 BCP
7:41 Put the coffee on, head out to the car to find my travel mugs (I never remember to bring them in.)
7:45 Bathroom, wash face (I shower in the evenings)
7:50 Chomp on my Kashi, read email, cruise the Dope
8:00 Wake husband, retrieve coffee, feed cats
8:05 "Are you awake yet?"
8:10 "How about now?" I get dressed.
8:15 "We have to leave in 15 minutes, you know." I find the books I need for the day.
8:20 Locate husband's wallet, keys, watch, and hat. "No, the dark blue one, not the light blue one!"
8:25 Read the Dope.
8:30 "It's time to go now, are you ready?"
8:38 We leave for 85 minutes of white-knuckled fury on the freeway.
9:25 "Did you remember my cell phone?!!" " Me? You had it last!"
9:55 Dropped off by class with barely enough time to pee and get into class. Husband: See, I got you here on time! Me:

I am so glad it's almost summer.

I also use a Bose as my alarm clock. Man, is that alarm tone the most evil sounding noise ever, or is it the most evil sounding noise ever?

I'm a houseleech, so I don't have any set 'wake up' time. I'm also an insomniac, so add that into the equation.

I wake up, usually quite early.
Bathroom run.
Feed dogs and cats.
Make coffee.
Turn on computer.
Drink coffee.
Drink more coffee.
Put on a second pot of coffee.
Start in on the housework.

Wake up at 9am
Turn on TV at end of bed, watch news for 20 minutes
Get up, get a drink of water
Go to computer, check email, news, and SDMB. This takes about an hour
Get dressed, run across street, buy a coffee
Computer again for another half hour
Shower, get dressed
Decide if I'm going to be a grown up today and pay bills, do laundry, etc...
Leave house sometime in early afternoon

Get up, shower, dry hair, dress, feed cats, make lunch, grab a cup of tea, head to the bus stop. That's about 45mins to an hour depending on how much faffing I do.

Your morning? Or my morning?
This is your morning....
Leave work at 7:30. Get home at 7:40. Eat a bowl of cereal and check my e-mail or read a book until 8:00. Watch reruns of Murder She Wrote until 10:00. Watch reruns of old game shows (Let's Make a Deal and Press Your Luck) until 11:00. Watch whatever is on from 11:00 until 14:00. I Usually read a book or SDMB while watching TV. Make sure the door is unlocked for my nephew (he gets home from school about 14:45). Go to bed around 14:05. Blissfully fall asleep with no trouble by 14:20.
(This quiet alone time will end next week when one of my nephews starts his last week of school. He has half days next week. After that, I will be watching them both all summer and wont get to bed until about 15:45 when my sister and her boyfriend get home from work. It's the price I pay for a nice room, cable, internet, my car cleaned for me, and no rent.)

My morning goes like this:
Cell phone alarm goes off for the first time at 21:30. This is my warning. I go back to sleep and wake up with no alarm at 22:05. I say hello to my sister's boyfriend (and my sister if she's still up). Pee. Shower. Get out of shower at 22:15. Dry off. Dress. Deodorant. Curl eyelashes (mine are rediculously long and annoyingly straight. I don't wear makeup but have to curl the bastards). Brush hair. Put on shoes and talk to my sister's boyfriend (and sister if she's up) about work (we all work for the same company, in the same department - but they work first shift). Leave for work at 22:45. Get to work at 22:55. Go in, put hair up, hairnet on, and punch in. Commence 8.5 hours of hell.

The routine is the same, the time just varies.

Wake up when husband wakes me up (anywhere between 5 and 7)
Immediately duck under the covers (dog will be jumping on the bed and I get scratched up if I'm not covered up.)
Drink beverage husband has placed on nightstand while smoking cigarette.
Get out of bed, go to the bathroom.
Put on contacts.
Brush hair.
Brush teeth.
Take off watch.
Take shower.
Leave shower, put watch back on.
Get dressed.
Plug in curling iron.
Put on makeup.
Put away makeup, lock bedroom door.
Dry hair.
Curl hair.
Go downstairs while yelling at the dog to get out of the way (he chases your feet as you go down the stairs.)
Grab purse.
Grab grapefruit or lunch (if bringing either to work.)
Leave house.
Go to Home Depot (if necessary.)
Go to gas station for newspapers.
Get dropped off at work.

I know, I know - we know how to party, don't we?

School year routine:

5:23am - Pixel wakes me up. The alarm is set for later, but it hasn't gone off in years. Pixel is much more reliable.
5:25 - Get up, turn on lights in living room, grab reading material.
5:27- Off load material excess to needs, shower, shave in shower.
5:50 - Get dressed, feed and water cats, load up belt and pockets with necessary equipment
6:10 - Kiss wife goodbye, drive to work
6:20 - Arrive at work, fire up computer, check email, then check the Dope to see what's new with the world.
7:00 - Walk to Main Office with Department Chair, discuss failings of those up and down the food chain, get mail from box.
7:15 - get a breakfast sandwich or breakfast burrito from food service, prep classroom for the day
8:00 - Showtime!

Summer routine:

Morning? What's that?

4:50 Husband's alarm goes off. He hits snooze. Sometimes I get up, because we have a new puppy, and he doesn't understand snooze. But sometimes I snooze, too.
4:59 Get up and pee.
5:00 Let dogs outside to pee.
5:01 Feed three dogs, and refill water bowls.
5:03 Let dogs in. Watch them gallop to the food.
5:04 Grab coffee cup, put in 2 tsp of Benefiber and add water.
5:05 Take 4 different pills, wash down with water.
5:06 Refill coffee cup with coffee made the night before and set to auto.
5:07 Sit down and watch dogs play and watch the news. Let them out again.
5:10-6:00 Drink coffee, and let various dogs in and out. (I'm trying to housetrain the puppy.)
6:00 Take shower.
6:10 Comb hair. Brush teeth, floss, mouthwash. Apply deodorant, baby powder, and makeup. Get dressed.
6:25 Let dogs in or out, as required. (My dad is there to let them in again.)
6:30 Grab breakfast (leftovers from the night before) and sugar free creamer. Grab purse, keys, work badge, exact change for coffee stop, glasses, cell phone.
6:35 Stop at store to get more coffee.
7:00 Get to work, check personal email, fire up the Dope.

I am an absolutely horrible morning person. I don't set the alarm, but I do wake up precisely 1 hour before I have to get to work.

8 AM: Blearily crawl out of bed.
Feed my betta & his catfish friend in the spare room.
Go pee.
Brush my teeth. This opens my eyes a bit.
Take a shower. Between 3 to 7 minutes, almost never more.
Come out in a towel, put in contacts.
Find clothes.
Get dressed.
Comb hair, put gel in.
Decide if I am going to wear any jewelry, put said jewelry on.
Go downstairs.
Pop English muffin into the toaster.
Feed turtles downstairs.
Wash hands.
Pack a lunch out of leftovers or whatever I can scrape together.
Butter muffin with yogurt butter.
Eat muffin.
8:35 to 8:40 - Grab stuff, and head out the door.

And this is the same almost every day.

6:00am alarm goes off
Doze for a bit
Stumble out of bed
Shower (if I didn't the night before),
Dress, deoderant, perfume
Go grab my coffee and my lunch, pull on my steel toes.
If I have a few minutes, sit and watch the news

6:35am Leave house
6:40am catch the bus
7:40am (or thereabouts, depending on traffic and connections) arrive at work
Punch in
Start checking email and sorting out any paperwork dropped on my desk.

5-6:30: wake up prematurely in summer-- grab laptop on the way to the can, check e-mail and front page news, see if I've been killed yet in pirate mafia game.

Crawl back into bed, with computer if semi-awake, hide in bed if not.

6:30: clock radio goes off, husband sort of wakes up. Either listen to annoying CBC wanker and classical music, or local university radio station, which on whatever day will either be BBC world service news or WTF style college-radio "what happens if I play THESE three old albums at the same time? Art!"

Get up, uncover parrot. Sit down next to cage and scratch his head and neck for 5 minutes or so because it is demanded. Stick his perches up in the adjacent window so he can glare at seagulls and screech at passersby. Feed parrot.

Meanwhile husband has probably started working on making coffee and breakfast (kitchen in morning is generally his domain-- he gives a damn about cooked breakfasts so it's his problem. Probably waffles or toads in holes).

If breakfast involves egg, give a bit to the parrot so he stops whining about it.

Remember to eat various pills.

Continue to browse usual websites sitting on couch. Running parallel-play commentary on various news and websites with husband as he browses online on the other machine.

Realize I shouldn't respond to student e-mail until AFTER drinking coffee. Drafts of responses edited down from 'are you that fucking stupid?' tone to probably excessively empathetic and mellow. Think about getting to work.

If school year, panic about today's lecture powerpoint and notes. Start scurrying about in books and files.

If summer, have existential/ career crisis about what to work on today to improve cv to try to get real job next year, and open either document optimistically titled '"book".doc' (with scary quotes) in folder 'damned thing,' or another document with the nascent traces of an article that doesn't yet have anything like a point.

8:50-9:10. Take a break to help husband find keys, wallet, bike helmet, bike gloves, etc.

I have no idea why I'm so interested in threads like this one. For some reason I really enjoy reading about other people's boring routines. Weird. Anyway, here's my list:

5:50am - Alarm goes off
Around 6am - Stumble into bathroom for usual morning stuff
6:20 - Out of bathroom, put on deodorant, clothes, say hi to cat #1
6:30 - Brush teeth, comb hair
6:35 - Walk to living room to put on shoes, avoid killing myself as cat #2 tries to trip me
6:45 - into car, turn on NPR, drive to work
7:30 - Arrive at work, buy coffee, smoke
7:45ish - start work

This is the same every Monday thru Friday. Weekends I get up around 7:30 or 8.

Get up
Dress the first: Jeans or shorts, T-shirt, baseball cap
Walk dogs, not far or long, about 20 minutes, long enough for them to sniff around and do their bidness
Home, feed and water dogs, feed fish
Put in contacts
Dress the second: workout shorts and sports bra
30 minutes on the treadmill, watching morning news on TV
Shower
Brush teeth
Moisturize face
Mousse and dry hair
Dress the third: Work clothes (business casual most days)
Put on makeup
Put on jewelry
Grab bag (packed the night before) with lunch and work stuff; add book to it
Corral dogs in kitchen, give them chew toys
Out the door

I'm usually up at 7 and I'm always to work by 9. I am not a morning person and I can't get up before 7; I'll skip the treadmill if I have an early meeting rather than get up before 7. I don't use an alarm and I don't "snooze," but my clock is set 10 minutes fast.

I get up sometime between 5am and 7:30 am, depending on how tired I am. After rolling out of bed, I:

- head downstairs and put on my "pig pants" (just some old ratty jeans) and wellingtons
- walk down to the barn
- sneak over the gate so I can close the door to the stock room before our 4 pigs get outside
- start filling the pigs waterer
- mix up their feed
- check their mudhole for sufficient mud, if low, let the hose run in there for a while
- dump the feed in the trough, then open the stock room door and get the hell out of the way
- head back to the house, clean myself up, and head to work

6:45 Breakfast (bowl of cereal, glass of OJ or maybe some left over pancakes) Have local news on TV so I can check weather, traffic
7:00 Hurry Lilly along - she's a dawdler Start to get dressed
7:15 Collect brief case, lunch (packed the night before), gym bag (packed the night before), and Lilly (she's not packed the night before)

In care - listen to NPR

7:45 Drop Lilly off at school (if during school year) or her mother's house (point of contention - she won't meet me halfway)

8:10 or so Get to work, go to cafeteria and buy large cup of ice and a diet Dr. Pepper (not a coffee drinker)

8:15 or so Fire up the computer and away we go

At 7:00, the alarm goes off. I pretend I didn't hear it for about five minutes or so, and then crawl out of bed and sort of slump to the floor bleary-eyed.

Breakfast in the kitchen, reading the Globe and Mail in my pajamas, and then I go back upstairs. Get dressed, throw things together (books, cellphone, wallet), fight a losing battle with my hair, brush teeth and wash face and put on makeup, find shoes, and head out the door by 8:00.

8:08 or 8:18, I catch the bus south on Avenue Road; I usually pick up a copy of the Toronto Star and read it on the way, or crack open a library book. I transfer to the second bus going south on Avenue by 8:30, fill out the crossword and bravely attempt the Sudoku (and fail miserably), and get off at Queen's Park. Classes start at 9:00 or 10:00; I pick up a hot chocolate (or cider, or chai tea) on the way, and slide into my seat just in time.

5:30 - 6 - Baby starts waking up. I still don't know why I set my alarm for 6:30, since he only sleeps past 6 if he's completely exhausted.
6:15 - Change baby, give baby first bottle. Start breakfast, coffee.
6:30 - Wake up husband by tossing baby on his chest. Take shower.
7:00 - Wander out to kitchen, eat breakfast, get baby dressed. Play with baby for a while.
7:40 - Put diaper bag together for baby's day care, pack lunch, pour coffee into travel mug, take stuff down to car
7:50 - Start pushing husband out the door and getting baby ready to leave (usually involves me chasing him around trying to put his socks on)
8:00 - Leave
8:10 - Get to day care, drop baby off
8:30 - Leave day care for work
9:00 - Get to work, flash badge a couple of times, get to cube then off to the first meeting of the day

Socks on baby or socks on hubbie? Mind you, both can be equally difficult.

*Snort* Both, actually. Some days I feel I need to work out much, much more just to wrangle both into their clothes.

The alarm is set for 10. I may or may not actually get up before then.

Followed by morning getting up stuff. Then breakfast.

Surf the internet.

If I'm getting a lift to work, I'll set off at 11.30. If not, I'll head for the bus at about 1045.

For the next few work days:

Alarm at 5:20
Snooze until no later than 5:35
Get breakfast and surf the internet and the Dope
Around 6:20, get dressed, being careful not to wake up husband
Around 6:30, kiss husband goodbye (sometimes, he even remembers saying goodbye to me)
Pack lunch and leave house by 6:45
Arrive at work anywhere between 7:15 and 7:45 (the Parkway's a crap shoot)
Get self together and set up for the day before the children arrive by 8:25

After the next few workdays, and until mid-August:

No alarm
Breakfast/Lunch and surfing internet until I wake up
Then, whatever the heck I want to do

Our alarm is set for 7am, which I maintain means that I technically rise at seven and that it’s just a very drawn-out, stop-motion process. His Filthy Tory Plutocracy gropes blindly for the shower at 7.30, and I spend another nine minutes dreaming I am in a carpet advert, which is the effect Classical FM tends to have upon my hindbrain.

Since I am a wildly indulgent snoozer and an evening-shower person (Why take your filth to bed?), my morning ablutions consist of filling the sink with water and immersing my head, trying not to put both of my contact lenses into the same eye, an approximate swipe of deodorant and stabbing up my hair with a couple of pens. Occasionally, I incorporate clothes.

I leave the house at eight and Himself drives me to town, where I catch the perennially delayed 8.24 Glasgow Central service, taking just enough time to depress myself thoroughly over the Metro letters page. I used to catch the circular bus service to work, but I was forever thirty minutes early and, since there’s a Homebase across the road, arriving at my desk with my distraction of houseplants and cut-price letter holders. These days I walk the three miles in; infinitely better for my waistline, wallet, and colleagues' perception of my impulse control.

Heh. Mine's a little backwards as well. Literal morning, we'll start at 4:45 just to make some sense.

4:45 - finish up some paperwork
5:00 - set out food for morning guests
5:45 - welcome friendly co-worker
6:00 - sit down, work on paperwork
6:25 - grab the USA Today and read some of it
7:00 - leave work and drive home
7:10 - get home
7:20 - fall asleep (most days - I'm on break this week)
9:20 - get up
9:30 - shower
9:45 - leave for the college
10:00 - 4:00pm - college (most days) then sleep

My morning...
9:00pm - wake up
9:30pm - pick up dinner or make something
10:00pm - go to Mrs. Smalls work to eat together
10:45pm - go to work...
11:00pm - watch television until I have to do something.

waitwaitwait... you set your alarm in the morning?

*runs away*

Mine:
wake up at unOgly hour without any kind of external alarm,
go pee,
realize I'm not sleepy any more,
see it's absolutely not time for breakfast yet,
get drink (water, milk) while computer boots up,
do stuff in computer until reasonable time rolls by,
decide whether I'm taking a shower or not (in general I prefer to shower in the afternoon) and take it or not
dress
breakfast
brush teeth
spend more time in computer until it's time to leave for work.

I had a couple jobs where I could go in as early as I wanted and leave eight hours later, but in general it's a no-no.
