The next book in everyone's favorite world without electricity and gunpowder came out about a month ago.

Who else is reading this?

I enjoyed it, not as much as I did the first one, but a lot better than I did the second. I still hate Rudy with an undying passion. I wish that kid would die already, I think he's so annoying.

Another fault I had with the story is that it's too McKenzie focused. I always found them the least interesting clan. I wanted to hear at least a little something about the Bearkillers.

Oh, I imagine Stirling will shoehorn the Bearkillers in somehow. And after all, Mary and Ritva are along. If I was laying bets as to which one of the nine companions would die, I'd bet it would be one of the twins. After all, one would be left and Stirling could get lots of angst out of the survivor.

I'm hoping it gets better, I didn't enjoy this one as much, although there were good sections. It was amusing to see "where are they now, and what are they doing" updates. One character I don't remember being refered to though is Dennis. Is he still around? I think it looks like they will find out at least something of why the Change occurred, I'd prefer it to be a mystery though, and have the focus solely on the "new history".

If I had to pick one side of the Change to live on though I'd rather be on the Nantucket side. At least there I could imagine that life was still going on as before uptime, and not know the horror that occurred. And to see Stonehenge whole? And flocks of passenger pigeons, moas, dodo's and so on?

Yes, I've read it and enjoyed it but not as much as any of the original DtF trilogy. Part of the trouble is that it isn't really complete. Stirling has already said he has written the The Sunrise Lands trilogy essentially as one extended work - a la LOTR. I'm tempted to wait until the third book, The Sword of the Lady, comes out before reading the second but that's not planned until 2009 and I'm not sure I've got the will power

Like Baker I don't really want to know what caused the change - Alien Space Bats will do for me - and I worry about the introduction of apparently supernatural forces operating on a day to day basis but - hey - its not my universe.

Yeah, DTF will always be my favorite, but what I really enjoy about this new one is that I love hearing about other 'countries.' Dunno why, but how different each culture is facinates me (Except for the McKenzies, I hate them all).

I read it...I hope we get some sort of explanation of what happened to Nantucket and the rest of the world. I like it so far, but frankly I am getting tired of the betrayals by the PPA people.

I agree with MarcusF. I read it and enjoyed it, but it was so clearly part of a whole that I was a little disgusted. At least the Dies the Fire books had a little bit of a stand-alone quality to them, and weren't such a serial.

I do like the Mackenzies though, and I like the humanizing of the PPA people as they age.

I like the MacKenzies, they'd make good neighbors and allies. I'd like to learn to carve wood as they do, brew beer, and play the bagpipes. But I would probably find it hard to live among them permanently, as I'm not Wiccan. Sure, sure, they have freedom of religion, but I doubt that any non-Wiccan will ever hold any truly responsible post with them.
