There is a video on that page as well, if (like me) you find that quote difficult to believe. Thank goodness for the long primary process, so we can find out these details before the general election.
I think this reveals Huckabee’s glass jaw that the Democrats will smash if he is nominated.
You know, I’d heard that he had a theocratic streak, but until now had never really seen it. This frightens the hell out of this particular Roman Catholic. Who’s to say what God’s standards are? His election, if he’s honest about what he stands for, can mean nothing good for religious freedom.
This is part of why I was arguing in this thread that the electorate should damn well want to see Huckabee’s sermons he delivered while a preacher, and should punish him politically for refusing to turn them over. This guy wants elements of Christianity written into the Constitution of the United States. It makes it highly relevant what, exactly, he thinks Christianity is all about. I have dark suspicions. Although I would vote against anyone who wanted to establish a theocracy, liberal or conservative.
The Huckster’s narrow religious stance is indeed very frightening. The only good thing about him is that he’s drawing away the nutty bigot vote from Romney, thus splitting the fundamentalists and making it all the more unlikely that either will accomplish anything.
This is precisely why the Founders made it difficult to amend the Constitution- so that one person’s beliefs will not become fundamental law unless an assload of people agree with him.
I’m personally not worried about Huckabee’s amendment dreams coming to pass, whether he becomes President or not. I have many more immediate concerns over which I can wring my hands.
This is why I am throwing my support to Huckabee for the Republican nomination. Who better embodies the spirit of the GOP’s rock-solid conservative values?
No messing around with people of suspect ideology like McCain or Giuliani, or cultists like Romney, let’s have someone who understands God like Huckabee. God’s gonna strike down all these sinful homos and athiests, and America, once again a God-fearing country, will stand strong and righteous with a man like him in the White House.
GOP Nominee Huckabee. Yeah, throw me in that briar patch…
You’re citing “Blessings of Liberty” as proof of Christianity in the constitution?! If it was “Blessings of God” or better yet “Blessings of Jesus”, you might have something, but “secure the blessings of liberty” just seems to be saying “to secure the benefits and overall awesomeness of liberty.” Unless Christians now worship liberty or something.
Is the phrase “Blessings of Liberty” specifically Christian?
Personally, I don’t really remember Jesus or Paul or any of those other types ever getting too worked up about freedom of the press or the right to bear arms, to say nothing about the rights of blacks and women to vote (I’m pretty sure Paul would have opposed the latter). But hey, I don’t claim to be either a Biblical or a Constitutional scholar, so what do I know?
I didn’t listen to the audio clip, but I wonder if he’s talking specifically about abortion and/or gay marriage, since he talks about “how we treat the family”. Did anyone listen, and are they any clues as to whether he had something particular in mind? This might have been aimed at McCAin, who doesn’t support a constitutional amendment to ban SSM
Not within the clip presented by MSNBC, but Willie Geist, the MSNBC commentator who introduced the clip, said Huckabee was speaking about “human life and the definition of marriage.” I 'm not sure what difference that makes, as no amendment should be considered based on how one religion interprets the word of god.
