New Kitty! Need name suggestions.
My wife and I found ourselves the new owners of a new kitty. Her sister found this poor little guy outside her house. He had lost use of his back legs and was dragging himself around in the snow.
She took him into the vet and found out that he had a bulging disc in his back. He suffered some kind of trauma but the vets didn't know how. She got him all his shots and the vets gave him a weeks worth of steroid treatments. The good news is that his back legs are working again. They are stick skinny because it is obvious that he hasn't used them in quite awhile, but the are working. The problem was that he is still pretty unsteady on his feet. My SIL's house has slippery wooden stairs going down to the basement and the poor kitty already took a tumble trying to negotiate them. So he had been stuck locked in a room when he wasn't supervised for his own safety. Well, he is quite the sweetheart and my wife and I couldn't let him live in isolation, so we took him in. We still don't know what to call him yet. I want to call him Garbage, but my wife doesn't like it. I'm open to suggestions - my wife seems to insist on people names for our kitties though. As you can see from the backround of the picture, Art has accepted him readily. Our other kitty is a bit wary, but I think she'll come around. |

He's very handsome! Sorry, got no suggestions - I'm terrible at naming kitties.

Cornelius. It's the first name that came to mind when seeing him. He's very dignified looking.

I'm STILL trying to get someone to name one of their furbabies this, and I'm going with it for this little guy, too. Claxton. |

I have been looking after my neighbour's two cats while she is in hospital. Let me suggest:
Shit Bag Fur Ball Vomit Stinking Kitty Litter Under Foot Trip You I'm not really enjoying my daily good samaritan act and today is clean out the kitty litter trays day. Even tipping them out you get a cloud of dust that I inhale. I end up feeling like a miner with black lung. Gee I preferred our cats that ate and toileted outside when I was a kid. And my brother's cats still do this, only coming in when they want some human company. Last edited by don't ask; 02-04-2008 at 11:22 PM. Reason: tense |

He's adorable. Reminds me very much of my long-departed feline friend, Claymore.

(Because he doesn't have the use of his back legs. Or at least, didn't when you found him.) |

Thanks everyone. He really does fancy himself royalty despite having limited use of his back legs. I think actually naming him his Royal Highness would go to his head.
Oddly enough, the missus and I were considering Winston or Baxter last night - Claxton is a good compromise I think. I do like the name Claymore too. Chester would be alright if it were short for Winchester. I'll have to go over these with my wife tonight to see what she thinks. He could be a Cornelius, but that is a mouthful and I can't see myself calling him Corn. Ianzen, we were thinking about incorporating his problem, but he may have a full recovery. We thought the name Handicat was kinda cute - but it would be silly if he got full use of his legs back. Sorry, Mangetout, I'm one of the few cat owners who isn't particularly entertained by LOLCats. |

He does look like you should name him something noble. I always wanted to name a cat Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke and call her Sidney for short. Never thought about a noble name for a male cat, though.

What is the name of Herbert the Pervert's dog on the Family Guy? That dog can't use its back legs, either.

His temporary handicap asside, he's very regal and handsome. Might I suggest the following:
Gerald Lanfare IV Aristotle Sigmund of Wallingford Jonathon. For the handicap angle: Christopher Reeve (what?) John Locke (if you're a Lost fan or even just really into the philosopher) Roosevelt In taking a random approach: Seamus (because it's a beautiful name) My kitties told me to tell you that you rock for taking in the little guy. They'll be sure to talk you up to the Mother Ship. Good Juju to you and your wife.

I often "name" neighborhood cats after their appearance (there's a black-and-white I call Moe because, from head on, it looks like Moe Howard of The Three Stooges). Alas, I see nothing distinctive in your cat (though his contemplative mien makes him worthy of something like Aristotle).
Though I'll probably smack myself later for suggesting this, how about Ironside, after the paraplegic 60s TV detective? From your description, it is clear that he is one tough pussy (oxymoronic pun intended). Or maybe Hardscrabble. |

Claude means "lame one".
And when you get him neutered, you can say you had him de-Claude.

Oh goodness, is he ever a handsome and regal looking lad. Mega karma points to both you and your sister for taking care of him.
He looks like a Charlemagne to me (or Charlie, for short), or perhaps an Alexander the Great. A cat like that deserves no less than a conqueror's monicker. |

You could name him after someone who's been caught using steriods. But I don't keep up with sports, so I don't have a list of names.
From a completely different angle, Barrymore has an august ring to it. |

How about Rex? It means king, and you don't have to cut it short before you can use it. (I agree with the Gaffer about names.)
He sure is a handsome fellow. Congratulations! |

The earlier suggestion of Claude reminds me of Emperor Claudius.
Alexei [Romanov]. Franklin or Delano [Roosevelt]. Jabba [the Cat]. |

Exactly why I address all cats as kitty. But every cat deserves a name, even if you don't use it much.

We meet at last! When I brought my alter ego here with me last year, I had never seen your username despite extensive lurking, otherwise I might have considered making up a new one. Wasn't trying to semi-hijack yours! And how interesting that the thread happens to be name-related. I'm with you and several above -- all the "Cl" names appealed to me, and I liked Claxton best. He definitely looks like an illustrious man. I first thought "Archimedes", but I'm weird. |

Another friend named her cat Purrkins. |

![]() brewha -- We called our current cat, who looks a lot like yours, "Silly." This solves two problems at once -- it fits ; and it's something that comes naturally and doesn't require a response. Mostly, it beats "Moron" (which is what I find myself calling him most of the time, anyway....) |

I hand raised her with another kitten (not her sister, they came in at different times but were the same age), the other kitten ended up with the name PurrAnna (Purr - Ahna) because of the way she attacked the nurser bottle, the name suited her then and it still does now for other reasons. |

He is rather accident prone too. Took a bumper to the gourd once but suffered no long-term damage. It might fit.
