He cites Magna Carta too. Surveillance society, Parliament Act, database state, the intrusion of the state into people's lives, etc.

It's politics, of course, but it's still a brave and bold move. I think it's also very cunning: if Cameron should falter, he'll be the obvious choice.

Oh, bold certainly. It'll get a lot of attention and the bigger a hammering the government gets over this 42-days nonsense, the better.

But brave? I don't know. If you look at the last General Election results in Haltemprice and Howden in 2005 (Davis won by 5,000) and consider that the Lib Dems aren't even going to field a candidate, the chances of Davis not being re-elected are around 0.

I think it's brave because, unlike a General Election, all eyes are going to be on him. If he slips up, or has a skeleton in his closet, it's going to be curtains.
