What flavor is Juicy Fruit?

I recently bought a pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum today and I soon found myself asking what exactly is the fruit flavor (if any) that juicy fruit is supposed to be? I wasn't sure if this had a real answer, so I posted it here.

Last time I had some, I was able to convince myself that the different colors had different flavors, but I have an pretty active imagination.

Personally, I always thought it tasted like jackfruit. Wikipedia concurs, sort of:

Quote:
People often report that the (Southeast Asian) jack fruit tastes nearly identical to Juicy Fruit, but just which "fruit" serves as its flavor has been deliberately made vague by Wrigley's. Recently the company has capitalized on this in a campaign selling gum with flavors named "Strappleberry" and "Grapermelon" under the Juicy Fruit brand. Wrigley's apparently told Imponderables that banana is one crucial flavor among many others. It is likely, however, that the chemical used for flavoring is isopentenyl acetate, a carboxylic ester.
So, isopentenyl acetate it is. Yummy!

Yeah, the different colours have different flavors. Juicy Fruit Blue tastes like blue Kool-Aid, Juicy Fruit Red tastes like some bastardized version of strawberry or somesuch, and I haven't tried Juicy Fruit Green.

Yes, that is true. My question was asking what flavor was the original juicy fruit supposed to be. Thanks for those who replied!

After sleeping on this reply, I realize that I was thinking of Fruit Stripe. Sorry.

Fruit Stripe's five flavors are supposed to be cherry, lemon, orange, peach, and melon but they don't last very long.

Yeah. I remember my youth when we'd pick ripe isopentenyl acetates right off the trees in Grampa's orchard.

Those were the days...those so-called isopentenyl acetates you get in the store these days have no flavor...

IMHO, it tastes like yellow. It's yellow-flavored gum.

I always thought it was a mishmash rather than any specific flavor. There's vague suggestions of bannana, grape, citrus, etc.

There's definitely a banana-ish taste to it.

Yes, they do have banana.

I would describe the taste of original Juicy Fruit as some sort of tropical fruit punch. Other than the Banana taste that Wrigley cops to I have no idea what the individual flavors would be.

If you combined the flavors of White Rain hairspray, Marlboro reds, Natural Ice beer, Mountain Dew with Popov vodka, lake water, grape lip gloss, sweat, and latex condoms with spermacide-- that pretty much is what I think Juicy Fruit tastes like.

I think it has to do with this commercial.

A version updated for 1987, which features the infamous "take a sniff, pull it out" line for the first time.

And finally, the pastel-drenched 1991 version, with a winter-season bonus.

I know this an old thread, but I made some Ginger snap cookies the other day, right? One recipe suggested Cardamom. So I busted up a bunch of the pods and ground up the seeds in my coffee grinder. I probably overdid them in the recipe, but it definitely has a Juicy Fruit type flavor, I'm convinced. See what you think if you have some Cardamom, grind some up and taste test.

There was a $500 million settlement. I'm not sure if this lady ran the company or had an investment in it or not.

I'd bet heavily that the flavor is a "fantasia," a synthetic combination, just as is cola flavor. It's meant to be ambiguous for wider appeal.

I wondered where that Cleo post disappeared too. My apologies.

I only buy the regular Juicy Fruit gum. Love the flavor. I assume it's a mixture of artificial fruit flavors.

Juicy Fruit used to be advertised as "a fascinating artificial flavor". I don't thunk it was ever meant to taste like any specific fruit.

If you wait long enough, they're juicy . . . and black.

And Juicy Fruit is tutti-frutti flavored.

It was introduced in 1893, while artificial flavors have been around a long time it seems reasonable that natural flavorings were used initially.

It tastes vaguely fruity for about five seconds and then immediately turns to "pencil eraser".

You're thinking of Fruit Stripe. Juicy Fruit keeps its flavor more on the order of 10-15 seconds.
