"Son of a gun"

Another angle on this one... A Southernism I've heard reference to more than once goes, "My daddy was a pistol, and I'm a son of a gun." Pistol, of course, being an epithet for a hell-raiser. No ideas on where this originated, but that's what we've got Cecil for, right? <g>
