Hi guys, GREAT to see you!

Okay, it's all about square brackets. You remember those? [ ] This time you put stuff IN 'em like so . . . the square bracket starts ([) and you put QUOTE and then the end of the bracket (]) and that turns it on . . . you cut and paste what you need to quote . . and at the end of it you put another square bracket ([)/quote(]) and that turns it off. [b]Of course you don't use those parenthesis, I put those around the brackets so as not to invoke the command.

Well, I must say it is definitely more complicated, and it's gonna take some getting used to, but I think it will be much better! You guys have done a pretty good job from what I can tell;-)

Sorry, Cat, I'm not picking on you; however, I just felt the need to show the Teeming Millions my favourite way of quoting on a UBB powered board and your posting seemed the most convenient. And, for those interested, the quote lines inside the quote have to me inserted manually (they're 80 characters long.

Call me crazy, but I could've sworn that little lightbulbs were supposed to pop up whenever new posts were added. If this is so, it didn't work for me. Anybody have any insight on what's happening here?

Thanks to Monty's 80 character quote lines, now ALL the posts run off the side of the browser, and I have to scroll back and forth to read them. Gee thanks. :P

Sorry about that, Opal. Maybe this will help: next time I quote something within a quote, I'll try it this way:

Another thing is the UBB, supposedly, resizes to your browser window. How it does this, I haven't the faintest. Sometimes minimizing and then restoring the browswer window works, sometimes it doesn't.

Stacey, are you not seeing the light bulbs at all? If so, this may be because you have cookies turned off on your browser. Alternatively - and I don't know how this would have occurred in your case - you may have "favorite placed" a version of the SDMB URL with "Cookies=False" at the end of it, which disables cookies. At any rate, I had this problem myself for a while and cookies were at the bottom of it.

I think I've successfully navigated through all the hoops in order to post a reply. I can get used to anything, but please don't make me scroll back and forth in order to read messages!

I have to agree with the previous posters on this one...this scrolling left-to-right-to-left is getting old in a hurry. Granted, I have a short fuse this morning, so that may attribute to my ire.

Also, is there a spell check feature anywhere in here?

There's currently no spell checker; possibly this may be included in a future upgrade. The right-to-left scrolling thing happens when somebody types in a long line without any spaces between characters. Ain't namin' no names here, but that's what happened on this thread. Normally the text adjusts to the size of the browser window.

I solved the scrolling-back-and-forth problem the old-fashioned way...I maximized the window. and it works just fine that way. Or were y'all talking about something else?

I just C&P what I write here or any other non AOL message board to an AOL text window and do my spell checking there. Or I do it in Windows Word from Microsoft Office 98. Then I C&P back here, it's quick and easy.

Not bad....aesthetically, more pleasing than I expected. If, as it appears, the threads are listed in actual order of response, that's another plus.

But is there any such thing as "list unread?" If not, the appeal could diminish real fast--I mean, who wants to scroll through dozens of messages to find where they left off?

I've found that if I use Ed's hyperlink from AOL, everything works well. However, if I manually type in the www address, it messes up. This morning I didn't use the hyperlink, and when I maximized the window, the scroll bars were off the screen. I used the hyperlink this time, and all is well with the world.

Now, who needs to know how I did that quote thing?

OK, I'm replying to what CK said about "the hard part being people that register under a different name.

First, yes, I know --in theory---how to quote. For some reason however, I can't copy and paste into this reply box. Copy seems to work, but paste does nothing. Ctrl+C boots me off AOL. It's just been o e of those days.

No, I didn't register under my AOL SN. I have always used my work SN for posting to the SDMB, and I felt fairly sure that none of my professional associates would ever "discover" the MB.

But if I use my SN on a web board, a web search might make my posts accessible to anyone that's curious. I have my SN spam-blocked when I post to Usenet for the same reason.

I'm not being paranoid----I'm just assuming that other people might have the same capacity for evil, sneaky revenge that I do, and face it, we do get rather personal on the MB. I've copped to lots of interesting facts about people I work with by searching out their SN's and/or full names on the Web and Usenet.

Just yesterday I discovered (via a Usenet search) that one of the sales managers for a competing company offered up a week at a corporate condo as a reward for anyone than could help him sell his house. I'm fairly sure that this is a big-assed violation of their corporate policy-but I'm not going to do anything with this information unless the guy pisses me off.

So -LTControls- is assuming that their are people out there as sneaky and evil as she is and therefore will be using the name "Barbara" here. I'm sure you all will be able to deal with it.

BTW, I'm not really happy that a web search turns up my purity score - and I will ask Opal to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

I have to say I'm very impressed. I thought this board would suck, but it is very nice except for one thing: you can't mark posts read. PLEASE fix this ASAP! I've read many similar complaints so far. But other than that, it's a great board.

Hyper, I don't think you understand. It isn't something that needs to be "fixed" because it is not broken. It is a feature that the software does not have. Ed did not write the software. Even if he has the programming knowledge to hack the software to add such a feature, this is highly frowned upon and probably specifically prohibited by the user agreement.

The meaning of my post was, that I was requesting that the writers of the software be notified that we would like the feature of marking posts read. I should have been more clear, sorry.

If you're talking about the experiment thread, yeah, but it wasn't up then. Anyway, the comment was <FONT COLOR="PURPLE">really</FONT> just a hastily conceived sentence added to keep that post from being a one-liner (I was testing the quote command also).

I agree with Snark that being able to mark posts/threads read would be a big plus. Do the software people welcome suggestions?

I have a question my-own-self: Do posts drop off/expire after a certain time (or will the moderators take them off the page after a certain time)? If not, even if the posters <FONT COLOR="PURPLE">do</FONT> start up new threads for tangents/topic changes some of these pages are going to get pretty long. And if so, are they going to be archived somewhere (onsite or offsite)?

I generaly like the board. The search feature is a wonder. The reply window on the other hand...the ability to include images is cool but if it gets popular these pages are going to take forever to download.
