Mattrach has Pachelbel spinning in his grave

This unassuming 15 year-old (when the vid was made) has been compared to Hendrix, Vai, Satriani et al. I must say I AM impressed, but, love the instrument as I do, I am still very much the neophyte.

Let’s see what the ‘purists’ and other guitar afficionados on this board think about it.

What? No takers? Not even an opinion?? :frowning:

The kid’s got some chops, no doubt about it. But then, do we really need another Eddie van Halen clone at this point? It’s all flash, and no soul. This is what you want for real guitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XBIfOFtmmM

Real guitar, eh? Well, I guess the concept is fairly elastic;). And I was more or less expecting the habitual comments along the lines of ‘all flash and no soul’, soul being another rather elastic notion. One has to wonder how much ‘soul’ the aformentioned guitar icons put into their music when they were 15 years old?

Not meaning to diss your opinion in any way, peghead, but this clip of yours kinda left me ‘wanting for more’; there was something lacking, although for the life of me, I couldn’t tell you what it was…

To each his or her own, I guess. Thanks for your input.

I guess then that this is true guitar

This guy still thinks it’s crap.

I actually LIKED that one, Rhythm. But he’s NOT 15!

Cheers for that bouv, great stuff!

As to the 15 year old, I agree with Fiddle Peghead, technically fantastic, but in the end quite boring as there’s no soul in it. Maybe he’ll get that with age.

I wish someone would tell young guitarists that no-one cares how fast they can play.

Heh… I was going for the whole real guitarist/trueScotsman thing … but had fun looking about for Scottish guitar!

I guess a case could be made that Tiny Tim put some soul into his ukulele towards the end.

What IS that thang we call… :drumroll: soul?

Did Hendrix have it? Did Stevie Rae Vaughn? How about Jessie Cook? Roy Buchanan? Or are\were they judged to be too (GASP) commercial to have anything approaching :drumroll: SOUL?

I’m genuinely interested to learn from the experts:D

I prefer funtwo’s version, but I couldn’t say why.
RR

I can’t define soul, either, but like obscenity, I sometimes know it when I see it. “Hurt” by Johnny Cash had soul; Nine Inch Nails not so much. “It Was a Very Good Year” by Frank Sinatra had soul; can’t say the same for the The Turtle’s version. As far as I know, Janis Joplin owns “Ball and Chain” because she takes her heart out and shows it to you. And “The Star Spangled Banner” by Jimi Hendrix was both whimsical and heart breaking, especially in context of the times. The kid in the video had some pretty snazzy moves, but the song didn’t move me for whatever reason.

I’m not an expert. Hell, I’m not even a musician, just someone who likes music. To me, I guess soul is when an artist gives more than notes and techniques and presents a point of view that touches me.

That was exactly my thought. He missed the whole style while trying to be cool.

Yorick: I wholeheartedly agree with you. Thank you for encapsulating as succinctly as you did the definition of a concept I couldn’t have described as acurately with ten times as many words.

I couldn’t help but smile when I saw you gave Jimi Hendrix’s Star Spangled Banner as an example because I wanted to reply to RiverRunner’s posting by saying that, in my humble opinion, it was a good piece even though it lacked soul but that this kid (Hendrix playing the SSB at Woodstock), on the other hand, showed promise:cool:

Ditto on Janice Joplin, BTW

He missed the whole style?

How about on a toy keyboard?

I like MattRach, but I too prefer FunTwo (51,700,831 views and counting!).

It’s good, but ever since Canon Rock I people have just been trying to get more and more insane. Canon Rock II was good, but it started resembling Canon in D less and less. This one I’d almost call “Rock Song that Heavily Borrows from Pachelbel” it’s GOOD, but it’s not a rock version of Canon in D, it’s a song that’s vaguely based around it with heavy improv.

Just as a palate-cleanser, here’s a funny rant about Pachelbel’s Canon.

Heh… given the context of the rant, your and bouv’s post #6 makes sense.
