What do you put in your flask?

I've got two stainless steel flasks: the little one my beloved teetotaling girlfriend bought me (4 ounces, little cap you have to make sure not to drop); and the serious flask I got for myself (8 ounces; cap is hinged so it won't be lost). (I used to have a half-pint flask that also had a screw-on shot-sized cup, but I lent it as a prop for a production of Brigadoon and never got it back.)

So, I like to keep those two flasks filled. You never know. Now, it seems to me that traditionally, flasks are filled with whiskey or brandy, so I've used those. But I need a refill, and it occurred to me -- why not use the liquor I usually drink, which is rum? (Specifically, Sailor Jerry 90 proof rum.) Perfectly good happy-juice. Why not tequila, if I've a mind too?

So -- what do y'all keep in your flask? (And you'll need a flask when you come upon a distressed maiden 'pon the moors. Don't say I didn't warn you.)

I generally only carry it at a gaming convention I go to every year. The entire weekend it will be filled with a concoction known as Death Rum. (It's a long recipe that starts with everclear and bacardi 151, last year the proof was about 107 when you average out everything that goes into it)

The stuff will knock you on your ass and is meant to be sipped. Hence the flask for easy, readily handy sips whenever I desire. (I love you Elisa for getting it for me and really love you Bill for making the stuff)

Mine is a two-ouncer, and I keep either Liquid Tylenol or Liquid Theraflu cold medicine, depending on the need. I know, boring....

And you really shouldn't store alcohol for long periods in the flask, btw.

And I just may smack the next customer who calls it a flash.....

On the very very rare occasions that I use a flask, I put some port in it to sip around a camp fire with friends.

I like brandy or scotch, both good sippin' liquors. Rum's a bit harsh to me.

In all seriousness, though, Sailor Jerry's is a great sipping rum. I think that would go well, although I've never used a flask, myself.

Haven't carried one for some time - used to have several, and gave nic hammered pewter flasks to my groomsmen. Probably my fave was Sambuca. Brandy is also nice.

I have one eight-ounce flask with a screw-on attached lid, but the lid is not a cup.

I usually put either Ten High Bourbon in it or Port Royal light rum.

My flask was a gift from a coworker, with the admonishment to NOT carry it while working.

I carry it in my huge-ass tote bag of a purse when I'm going to parties or places where I'm not sure they have hard liquor.

Brandy for me. That way if I ever run into somebody with cherries and someone else with vermouth, we can have manhattans aplenty. Or, you know, I can just drink the brandy.

Maker's Mark usually. Sometimes Buffalo Trace.

I own a bunch of flasks. A couple are Russian (1, 2) A couple are just generic 8 oz. with keeper tops. One is a freebie from Gallo. All of them get used.

Early Times or Jim Beam, which both mix well with cola, which is always for sale at concerts, games or movies.......

To save $$$ while bar hopping, Patron or even Jose C. is a good bet, since its always easy to get a lemon wedge or two from a bartender on your way out the door.

My flask o' brandy is just for enjoying the occasional sip or two, not to get me plastered. I'm pretty sure a litre of brandy would put me in the hospital, if not kill me outright.

I haven't been down to my vast, secret laboratory lately. Must I use a flask, or will a beaker do?

I don't generally keep my flask full, but do use it for special occasions. Bushmills for light hearted nips, or Smirnoff Blue for serious business.

Wow; quite a variety. Wouldn't it be neat if we were all on a bus, and it broke down somewhere, and to pass the time we all spontaneously pulled out flasks?

I think I started thinking about this because a flask was featured on Battlestar Galactica, which inspired me to get out my own flask, which now needs refilling.

Fill it with vermouth, we'll make an evening of it.

Hrmm...just how common is this flask-carrying thing, I wonder?

I would have thought that flasks were just for alcoholics--the only two people I've ever met who had them were serious alkies--but I'm hearing some self-reported flask use from people here who I consider to be responsible drinkers, and the rest are just people I don't know anything about, drinking-wise,* so the overwhelming effect of this thread on me is to make me question my assumptions about the damn things.

And also, to make me kinda want to go out and get one, even though I hardly ever drink these days! Bombay Sapphire for those long study breaks? That would make nights at the library slaving over a hot sentence tree go a little faster, wouldn't it?

* Plus one recovering alcoholic, but I don't know if that's my Big Reveal or if it's just the Law of Averages at work.

Eh, I only rarely use mine, and I think a lot of folks like that. The only times I've used mine was taking it camping or an outdoor event or maybe a BYOB situation. Most of your hip pocket flasks only hold enough for like three drinks, anyway.

So yeah, I could see how an alkie would use one to maintain, as well, but they probably need more than that to keep going.

Flasks are handy for maintaining a buzz between serves. We carry them if we are going to be casino-hopping all night, for example. A flask doesn't hold enough to get to orbit, but it does contain enough to keep you there for a while.

Usually brandy or whiskey. Good for sippin - though I rarely carry one. A couple times a winter I go snow golfing, and I'll always have my flask for those events.

Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey

Or Johnny Walker Red (or preferably Black, but if I can get Black, I can generally get good bourbon.)
