Shodan: Saviour of the Pit!!

Folks, Shodan has given us a shining path through the dark woods. If you've been following our story, you know that Shodan has announced that his notorious sig-line "Regards, Shodan" is intended to connote "Fuck you" on occasions, and on other occasions is meant as a mere friendly closing remark. Despite numerous complaints by me and several others which have been roundly ignored, complaints addressing the permission Shodan has been granted by TPTB to insult people grossly outside of the Pit, TPTB have ruled that Shodan may continue to use his sig-line freely.

Now since we have just had the rug pulled from under the feet of those who were formerly given to drop an occasional F-Bomb or twelve, I think we have to follow Shodan's example and tell each other, when people need a F-bomb hurled in their general direction, a simple "Regards." I think we'll all understand what that means, in certain contexts. We can be creative, too. "Regards, sideways, with a rusty drill bit" for example, will leave its meaning fairly undisguised, I think.

Good catch. I've since re-thought both rash decisions. Not entering the pit, and not re-subscribing, I've since realized, are both part of Ed's master plan to purge all of us free-loading "Charter Members" in the only way he can (since I think he could be sued for rescinding his offer to give us lifetime subsriptions to the SD for 15 cents per week.) Now hold it - Shodan has set that the ENTIRE phrase of "Regards, Shodan" is potentially used as an f bomb.

Just using Regards might leave part of it out. If Regards is Fuck, and Shodan is You - then it would be Regard Off! However, in some dialects the verb / noun / object / adjective order is different than that of The Pit's English.

In Shodanese, it might be more appropriate to translate the idiom as, perhaps:
Go Shodan yourself!
Shodan off!
I need a good Shodan, or I might just lose it.
Go take a flying Shodan!

There may be more than one link, given that the term enjoyed a brief popularity in these parts, but I am aware of one instance which I cannot find since I have crummy SDMB search-fu. I can tell you this about the thread I was in:

- Hostile Dialect used the term

- SkipMagic slapped HD down

- I posted in the thread (in fact I have a vague recollection that it was a thread I started, but that doesn't seem likely given my failed search attempt)

- The slapdown occurred around the 3rd or 4th of February 2009

- In an admirable show of good grace, Opal came in and posted after SkipMagic to say she did not mind if people wanted to use the the term

Duh indeed.

It's not the admission that matters so much here, though with Shodan the lack of an explicit admission usually equates to a vehement denial, but the fact that he has openly admitted using "Regards" to mean "Fuck You" and TPTB has sanctioned that use by not cracking down on it, ordering him to stop using the sig-line if that's his implied meaning, etc. Ed has told us that "Regards" in the sense of "Fuck You" is acceptable on the Straight Dope, inside or outside of the Pit. Now that he has also announced that "Fuck You" itself is verboten, we have a handy-dandy all-purpose substitute available, and I recommend we all start using it freely.

Your understanding of the situation is a bit off. Neither "buckeyes" or "buckeye" is prohibited. Instead, a specific instance--designed to insult another poster--was relegated to the Pit, only. This shouldn't have been a surprise since insults have never been allowed outside the Pit.

To me, "buckeyes" is NOT short-hand for a swipe at Opal, rather (as I stated on 30 Jan) in this thread:

I hesitate to try to condense the meaning that "buckeye" has taken on as a result of that thread, but "take your self-righteous oversensitivity elsewhere, I'm not buying it" is as close as I can come.

I don't claim to speak for the entire Dope, but I'm pretty darn sure that the vast majority of recent posts containing the term "buckeye" have been either (1) silly repeating of an in-joke that many of us found to be uproarious; or (2) shorthand for the meaning I assigned it above.

Using the term "buckeye" as a way to say "I'm gratuitously insulting Opal"? That's gotta come in a distant third to the other two usages.

I do regret making the glib post here last night, but I think the ensuing discussion illustrates the precedent I was trying to point out:

If harassing another poster = not allowed
and using the phrase "3. Buckeyes" = harassing another poster
and therefore "3. Buckeyes" = not allowed

then

if "Fuck you" = not allowed
and "Regards" = "Fuck you"
then will "Regards" be disallowed as well for consistency's sake?

I think the new Rule #2 (and dammit, is this post supposed to be in ATMB now, even though the original thread is in the pit?) is going to lead to a lot of code words of which "Regards" is only the first suggested. There's already been a pit thread closed because a poster was using sarcastic rainbows and sunshine as code for telling Ed to fuck himself. The PTB are telling us to be creative to avoid the language they'd rather we didn't use, and yet there's already precedent that such creativity isn't acceptable either, in certain circumstances.
