Reaper Returns! (3/3/09)
Reaper returns to the CW Tuesday as a midseason replacement. I really liked it last year and thought it compared favorably to NBC's Chuck. Also, Ray Wise as the Devil steals the show. I have high hopes for it.

Yeah, I just noticed my PVR was scheduled to record this. I almost forgot about the new season.
I'm looking forward to it. |

Hurrah!
I bet it won't last, judging by the ratings of genre shows this season. |

Thank you for reminding me! I thought I had set my DVR, but it turns out I hadn't. I'm psyched for the new season.

I loved it!
Though the solution (having them all stand in a conductor) was very predictable. And I had trouble believing that he'd hand over the vessel to the soul that easily. But, all in all, a great show.

Sock's sister is hot. Ooops! Viewers in Hawaii haven't seen it yet. That should've been treated as a spoiler.

Great episode. Well paced, not too emo and I liked Sock's new sister.

I like this show, I want to like it more.
The Devil and Sock are too great characters. I lke Bret Harrison a lot from Grounded for Life but I think he plays his character a little to straight. He needs to loosen it up a little, imo. |

ETA, but it was too late: Except, if he did, there would be no conflict. As it is, we have a moron who is basically nice Vs the worst super-demon EVAH! It is a battle, not between good and evil, but between NICE and evil. Under normal conditions, my money would be on evil, but the fun is watching Sam turn TOTAL EVIL on its head. I think there are Zen koans about this. I'm sure that, if I looked, there would be COUNTLESS Lives of the Saints that address it.
Um, not Lives of the PROTESTANT Saints, which tend to specialize with the specifics of the Eucharist, but plain ol' Catholic hagiographies. |

I saw the first few episodes but missed the rest - when I last left the show it was only suspected the Devil was his father and his adoptive father was still alive and hiding the truth.
Interesting that now that Sam knows there is an "out" his attitude improves immediately. Brian |

They got their jobs back at the Work Bench. When I heard in the preview that they got fired I was disappointed. I would have missed the Work Bench. Plus, I got laid off in real life on Tuesday, so it hit a little close to home. They got a new love interest for Sock. Josie and Sock never worked for me. This new stepsister is much hotter, too. I liked the souls and vessel this week. I liked the idea that there is an out. Their search for this new guy could be a season long arc. It adds to the mythology. Dislikes: It is now canon that Sam is the Devil's son. At the end of last season, it was still ambivalent and the Devil even denied it. I was hoping for a more clever resolution to that question. No DMV. No Gladys. Questions: The big cliffhanger last season was that Sam's mom rescued his dad after he supposedly died. Sam still thinks he's dead, but I am curious about where dad really is. Where's Sam's brother? Overall, I liked it. |

I believe Sam's brother may have gone off to play basketball with Chuck Cunningham.

Saw it last night and liked it a lot. The road trip, the lost letter, blackmailing the boss, the Fight Club-like warehouse full o' demons, the burning beer truck, the Nutcracker theme playing as Sam dangles from the roof... good stuff! And Ray Wise as Satan just keeps getting better and better. This is a great show - almost always funny, but with an emotional core and an odd undercurrent of menace. I'm glad to have it back.
Didn't Sam's mom dig out Sam's dad from the big hole the demons blasted in the ground at the end of the last half-season? I thought we heard his voice say something like "Took you long enough!" In any event, I don't think we've seen the last of him. Oh, and while Sock's new stepsister is indeed hot, Missy Peregrym is still hotter: http://www.scifiupdates.com/home/ima...regrym_001.jpg http://abcstudiosmedianet.com/showco...i/peregrym.jpg http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/Mis...Z0312_250h.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DLMbxIoKN3...y_peregrym.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DLMbxIoKN3...peregrym-4.jpg Last edited by Elendil's Heir; 03-04-2009 at 01:20 PM. |

I enjoyed the episode.
I'm not convinced that Sam is Satan's son. He's the devil after all, he lies. He may be mis-directing Sam for some yet to be revealed reason. Overall and most importantly, I'm glad Reaper is back. Now, if only Sci-Fi would get off their butts and get Eureka back on the air. |

I'm glad it's back. I like it well enough. Can't remember, how exactly was it confirmed Satan is his dad?
What happened with the gay demon? Is he still around, plotting against Satan? |

I like this show and I'm glad it's back, but of the three reaper shows (this, Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me), it isn't the one I would have chosen to have won out in the end. |

Best part: The end bit with the devil in front of the muscle car dancing to that crappy 80's hair-metal band.

That crappy 80's song was from the fight montage in Karate Kid.

Strictly speaking, none of the three shows actually feature reapers in the common sense of the term - which made it so amusing that all three were marketed as being shows about reapers or a reaper. Pushing Daisies I guess the justification was that he has some power over life and death. Reaper feature someone sending escaped souls back to hell, and Dead Like Me featured a group who remove souls from bodies shortly before they are fated to die. None of the shows feature someone actually causing people's slated deaths in the traditional reaper fashion.

I think I missed something. How did Sam get the 40 souls back to Hell after that one guy stole his magic cattle prod?

He didn't steal it. He dropped it after he stunned Sam.

So not enough love to have a new thread?
I gotta say that I get a little tired of these guys being as absolutely stunningly stupid as they are. Ben lets a soul that would gladly kill them get away because he is too freaking stupid to put down the bunny and grab the vessel? I would have beat his ass just for being that stupid. Granted, later he saves Sam and makes up for it, so I suppose you have to give a little leeway to someone who has done such things now and in the past... |

Ben had so little to do in the first season, he was often just a background character or a third wheel. I think they're really trying to beef up his personality this time, and one of those traits, or foibles if you like, is going to be he's too nice and it will often play a part in the stories.

Agreed. I really felt bad for him late last season when his TWO BEST FRIENDS forgot to come pick him up when he was released from Federal prison after serving a little time for immigration fraud.

3/17/09 Episode: I thought it was the best episode of season 2. The Devil had too many good lines tonight that I can't remember them all. It seems Nina will be around for awhile, since IMDb lists her as being in 11 episodes. I liked that they mentioned Cassidy when they mentioned Ben's bad luck with women. I had wondered what had happened to her. I miss Ted, but having Andy as the boss will be interesting. We still haven't heard anything about Sam's dad.

Sometimes IMDb makes assumptions on supporting cast appearances for future episodes, so that's not a reliable guide.
