how I should I ask google to find city-name ending in a X?
Google doesn’t allow wildcard searches in the way you’d need, so best you can do is google articles where someone has asked the same question.
I put in search terms “city name ending x” and found this.
I don’t think Google is the right tool for this. It’s not designed for the sort of wildcard searches you’d need for something like this (i.e., a search for “*x”). Fortunately, Google did help find a few city name databases:

Except that many of those in that list are not cities. For example, I saw one name in there that is the name of a village in Switzerland that I know very well, which only has less than 2000 inhabitants.
ETA: I see that you used a database listing “cities” with population > 1000. I would disagree that population > 1000 = city. A city is where you can’t walk in downtown back alleys at 2 AM without being afraid of a mugging.
That’s just a matter of semantics. I already said it was a “GeoNames.org database dump of cities with a population > 1000”. If you want only more densely populated cities, they have separate lists for that as well.

Well, if you want to go through that list and match it up with international violent crime statistics, by all means go ahead… =)
That’s an egghead way of doing it. What I will do is take the population>50000 list from geonames, go to each location ending in X and walk around waving my wallet at 2 AM. I’ll report back in a few months.
Which excludes most places in Canada and Japan, at the very least…
