First off, if you’re not already a player and want to become one, let me know first so I can get credit for the recuit!
OK, now that that’s out of the way, check out http://www.erepublik.com. It’s a massively multiplayer strategy game. When you sign up, you become a citizen of your selected country. At first, you just buy some food, get a job, and work out. But as you get higher up, you can run for congress, become president, own a megacorporation, edit a major newspaper, start a political party, or become a war hero. In fact, you can do all of these simultaneously!
What I love about this game is the economic aspects of it. Real players (not NPCs) “work” at corporations owned by real people, who have to sell the products on an exchange with real buyers. There’s even a currency exchange market where you can buy other currencies to purchase from other countries. I have fun bargain hunting. Right now I’m trying to get someone in Mexico to buy me food for cheap
Mexico keeps trying to invade the US, so I’m training up for war. The congress just bought an expensive hospital for the troops and that divided the populace. Apparently, the President was doing some shady dealings with the Swiss using the treasury funds so he got impeached. The election is tomorrow and I’m not sure who I’m voting for yet. We’ll see.
I think it’s safe to say I’m addicted to this game.
Oh yeah, and DON’T FORGET TO LET ME INVITE YOU!!! I need the gold…
It looked interesting, and not too much time-consuming, so I registered.
Sorry for the gold, I directly went to check the website and didn’t notice the part about being invited by you.
Though I’m not sure why I would want to give more gold to someone who intends to fight for the war-mongering country that recently attacked mine, anyway…
Minimum wage seems to be real good in eFrance (2.5/day). I scored an entry-level job that pays 5 FF/day, and low quality food is only 2FF over here. I see that eAamerican citizens are complaining about starving-level wages offered by greedy capitalists, so nothing new under the sun.
On the other hand, I wasted money trying to buy Iranian food and converting FF—>gold—>Rials. the currency market doesn’t seem to offer much opportunities for gain. Everybody seems to want ludicrous amounts of gold for their funny money.
Well, it’s mostly newbs that are complaining about the food. We have social programs (Meals on Wheels) that give you 4 days of food. That’s plenty of time to get your skills up and get a better job. It’s an illusion, really.
As for currency markets, you can take the FRF>Gold and multiply it by the Gold>FRF. If it’s higher than one, you should sell both currencies. If it’s lower, buy. It’s never right on 1.
As for those Iranian…whatevers…find out what Iranians are online and ask if they’ll buy the food for you. I did it in Switzerland and it worked great. Then I asked a Mexican to buy me better quality food. He just gave me 3 units and a moving ticket for free and said “Welcome to the game!”
Well…as long as you’re not obsessive-compulsive, I guess. Quality 2 food is more than twice as costly in eMoldova than in eFrance, when you take into account the current exchange rate. Now, how do you plan to become an exporter? And why is the eEscudo valueless?
Moldovia all out of whack with their money system. I blame the fact that there’s like 100 people in it. The way to become an exporter is just to donate the item to the person that wants it and the receiver donates the money back.
I have no idea why the currencies are valued the way they are. But the exchange rates help balance things out. Check out CCCP groupfor more analysis
Yes, arbitraging is the first thing I thought about, but it seems there already are people in it, operating apparently on a low margin, like 2%.
Food is actually 25% cheaper in the USA than in France, by the way, so your ecountry isn’t that bad.
If I understand correctly what I read somewhere, you would have got 5 golds had you invited me? Sorry. I would have liked to indemnify you, but that’s 60 days of my salary. If I keep on playing, maybe I’ll be able someday to help you in some way.
Reading the wiki, it looked like you had to (or at least could) create an “organization” and buy the right to export to another country. Did I misunderstand?
Thanks. I’ll look into that. You’re talking about “exchange rate”, but is there any other way of buying a currency than agreeing to an offer made by someone at a price he fixed? (or making your own offer, of course)?
No, you understand it. It’s just that we small, young guys can’t create organizations yet. We’re too poor and too low level. Donations don’t require a sale or a treaty of any kind. If you go to someone’s profile, there is a “Donate to” option. It’s on the upper right menu. You can donate anything in your inventory or money. To buy from another country, I first change over the right amount of currency into the local kind. Then I ask whoever’s online to buy the product for me. They say yes, and I donate them the money. They buy it and donate it back to me. It’s not an official business, nor an official sale, nor taxed. Yes, they can run off with your money. That’s why I called it smuggling.
No. The only other way of getting currency is to pay real-life money for some gold. I’m not willing to do that yet. And yes, they do operate on 2% but they do it repeatedly. Today, I did it 4 times, making a profit of 8.2%. That’s enough to double my pay for the day, and with the smuggling, enough to get a lot of food.
What’s your username? I’d say PM it to me, but in case someone else comes along, we can start an SDMB smuggling party. I’m “Mike Phoenix” (not my real name, obviously).
Well…I have another question regarding salary. I picked yesterday an unskilled job that was paid FRF 5. It is my understanding that I can’t resign for three days, and that my boss can’t reduce my salary during the same period.
What I don’t get :
I can’t seem to find where is my current salary mentioned.
I noticed today that for the same job, my greedy boss was offering only FRF 4.54. I assume it shouldn’t apply to me. After I worked, I only got FRF 3.51 Why didn’t I get the FRF 5 offered when I applied, or at least the FRF 4.54 the company is currently offering?
ETA : I found my salary, when looking at the employees list. It’s indeed supposed to be FRF 5
Sure, but you can only do that if you buy a currency when it’s low and sell it when it’s high (for instance I noticed that the British pound rose significantly today). So, you need to have a variety of currencies in reserve to sell them at the best moment. Or is there something I’m missing?
Well, as I say, I’m using Clairobscur there too… And if you’re willing to send two Q1 food to me tomorrow (I don’t have any money left today), I’ll be willing to pay US$ 2.5 for them. Not that it would be a huge benefit for you, but it’s a start.
Of course, in the future, I’ll make offers through the game’s mail, in order not to clutter this thread.
There are congress elections in France today. Do they happen in all countries at the same time?
Also : the Czech Republic is offering a two way ticket to people willing to move and vote in their election (they’d facing some hostile political takeover). If I fly back and forth to the CR today, am I losing my job in France? Do I have to quit the job first? And in the latter case, since I’ve been employed for only two days, I assume I can’t?
I think I figured this out. There’s a 30% income tax for “wood” in France (I work in a lumber company), so I assume that actually I’m only getting 70% of FRF 5, or 3.5. Right?
Taxes are significantly higher in France than in the USA. Again, nothing new under the sun.
At first glance, this game looks like fun. I thought I’d no clue whom to vote for after only one day spent playing, but first only one candidate bothered to explain why we should vote for him, and second, he’s a cereal company owner, I settled in a region that’s productive for cereals, and intend to work in cereals. So, this candidate should have my best interests at heart, and is going to get my vote (If I can’t be bribed into moving briefly to the Czech Republic during election time).
It’s not the taxes on wood, it’s the taxes on income. Just plain old income tax.
I’m pretty sure elections take place on days ending in 5. One for party presidents, one for congress, one for president, every month. To move, I think you do need to quit your job. I don’t know about the 3-day rule.
What’s interesting to me is that this is a Romanian game. Yet, there are more US and Indonesian players than Romanian…a LOT more. I’m surprised that apparently I’m the first doper to play it. Or at least say so here. I wonder if the other English speaking countries will catch up.
This looks like fun. Chessic sense, would you be willing to donate some of your invitation earnings to me if I sign up? Or are there rules against that kind of extortion?
How much time do you have to spend playing/learning this game?
I joined MONTHS ago, but I just got an email saying I’m dying. That’s ok. I just can’t get into these pseudo D&D games. There were so many rules, my head started hurting.
So, I have become a corps in eRepublik. It looked interesting, but who has the time? Am I missing something here, or is it a real time commitment?
It’s not a real commitment at all. It can be played for 5 minutes a day and you’ll stay alive and prosper. You’re dying because you haven’t bought food or gone to work in months. I read the FAQ in 3 minutes, looked on the forum for the help thread “Things to do on your first day” and learned the rules in an hour total. Then I just explored on my own and picked up some tricks.
