Which "legendary" comics do you own?
I was wandering around Polite Dissent, and noticed that they do a lot of discussion about comic books.
I'm reading Wikipedia now about "legendary" story arcs, writer runs (particularly those by Alan Moore and Chris Claremont) and individual issues ('What do you get for the Man who has Everything?). I was wondering what "famous" comics you currently own. For me, I have: The Dark Knight (#1, first printing, and trade paperback) Watchmen (first print issues, all 12.) Flash Vol. 2 (up to issue ~20, with the first annual.) Macross #1. The Jack Kirby run of Captain America, in "Essential" TPB. The entire run of the Amazing Spider Man on CD. The Chris Claremont run on X-Men, in Essential TPB. Usagi Yojimbo #1. Lone Wolf and Cub #2, first printing. Justice League (International) run up to ~20, but I missed out on the misprinted cover on #3. |

Depends on what you mean by "legendary," but I have the entire first run of the original Len Wein-Bernie Wrightson-Nestor Redondo Swamp Thing.
I have all of the Howard the Duck except for issue 1 (though I have a reprint of that). I also have all of the first two or three years of American Flagg!.

I have over 10,000 books - depending on your threshold for Legendary, I might have hundreds of those.

I have many Silver Age DC comics. As I posted recently, last week's "Big Bang Theory" featured the "Flash of Two Worlds" issue which I have. Lots of the "Earth 2" story intros of that era.
I also had the first "New Look" Batman but it disappeared. The first issues of "Metal Men", is that legendary? Early "Hawkman" and "Atom". Etc. |

All Iron Fist issues including Marvel Premiere intro; Luke Cage; a variety of cool Marvel stuff - oy, all sold - Watchmen - special edition leather-bound by Graffiti press with extra back pages providing origins of the series and prelim drawings - still have. - Batman: Year 1 From the 1940's I have a hardcover version of a newspaper comic created by Crockett Johnson, of Harold and the Purple Crayon fame. It's this book - very fun if you know the strip... |

I have, from the late 60's, quite a few Fantastic Fours, X-Men, Mighty Thor, and a few others...Conan the Barbarian for the flabbergasting artwork. I LOVED Marvel Comics when I was a young girl and haunted the Rexall Drugstore waiting for new ones. I even had Millie the Model and the Rawhide Kid!
(Yes, my mom threw out my humongous collection and yes, I could have retired in style after selling all those rare issues.....just have a few of my favorites for the memories, though the stories are kind of dorky decades later.) Last edited by salinqmind; 10-07-2009 at 08:09 PM. |

Uncanny X-Men #141 (Days of Future Past) is probably my sentimental favorite
I had an old beat up copy for as long as I could remember, but traded it to a friend somewhere in Jr. High. A couple years later I bought a nm copy at a convention for $9. Also, a lot of the original Mirage TMNT comics. Not first printings for 1-3 though. I think my #1 was 3rd print (still oversized!), and the others were 2nd print. 4 on were all 1st print, though. That was a big deal back in the day, which printing your TMNT's were, lol |

Let me think.....
The Tick #1 and #2, limited editions (print runs of 5000 and 3000 copies, respectively). I also have first prints of issues #3-8. Frank Miller's run on Daredevil. Walt Simonson's run on The Mighty Thor. First prints of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 and #7, plus first prints of the Raphael and Donatello one-shots. I only have the second print of The Killing Joke. You can tell which one you have by the text on the cover; as I recall, the first printing is red, mine (if I'm remembering right) is purple, and later printings are green or other. |

Couple random Amazing Spideys, pre-30. Like, 12, 17, 21, or something like that. Good to V. Good.
Star Boy's first appearance, Adventure Comics. (Horrible shape) For The Man Who Has Everything (Action Annual... 10?) Good. Bought it new, read it quite a bit. Entire Alan Davis run, Excalibur. Most of the Claremont X-Men, including Days of Future Past. Crisis On Infinite Earths, original issues, mintish. Watchmen, original issues, mintish. Tick, first or second printing (the outsize ones) good shape. TMNT, 2nd or 1st printing, first ten issues or so. Spawn #1, for some reason. Random stuff. If it's from the last 20 years, I probably have it. If it's from the 60s... I have _some_ of it. Reprints: I have about ten feet of Essential and Showcase reprints, and various trades. Maybe more than ten feet. Things I do not have: Underground Comix (Except some Wonder Warthog), and Sandman. (I do have Death: The High Cost of Living) Lesse. Death of Superman, first appearance of Venom (Web... 99? The Spot was in it.), first credited appearance of Venom, first Deadpool, most New Mutants of the classic era, Astro City's first twelve... lots of Journey into Mystery and Tales to Astonish... Just Preacher #1. Bought it when I was briefly trying to get into comics as a high schooler 'cause a few of my friends were into 'em. (Course, I screwed it up by going for comics no one else read.
) Sadly its not in the sort of condition to be worth much, though it's in good condition for non-collectors... but it's a nifty thing to have.

LOL, I have that one too.
My dad - an extremely straight-laced accountant - somehow ended up working as the CFO for a comic book distributor back in the mid 90s. Good times. My extremely "Grey, black or navy suit, every day. No exceptions." dad ended up having both a "Punisher" and an "X-Men" poster, framed (very tastefully!) in his office. Funny thing - he tried to get me into comic books. Yes, my middle-aged, conservative, accountanrt dad tried to get me into comic books. I was maybe 13. I resisted, because, you know, it was my dad. A pity. Never really got into them. The company folded late 90s and my dad moved on. But I do have a "Death of Superman". I remember my dad telling me it would be worth something someday. It's probably still collecting dust in my old bedroom in my parents' house. |

Second of all - what do you mean by the Flash #105 as the first Silver Age issue - is that the first with Infantino doing the artwork or something? Why is it heralded as the first SA issue? Please note I am not doubting you at all - only that I didn't realize there is a comic recognized as the "birth of the Silver Age" and I'd like to learn more...I guess I woulda gone with Fantastic Four #1 or something as the birth of the Silver Age, since I think of SA as mostly Marvel... |

Flash #105, First Barry Allen as the Flash in his own comic. Legendary, but not generally credited as the birth of the Silver Age. That would be Showcase #4, Oct 1956, which introduced the first of a new generation of Super-Heroes after the genre all but died out after WWII and Frederick Wertham. It happened to be Barry Allen, the Flash.
Barry made several appearances in Showcase before moving to Flash, with #105, the numbering picking up where the Golden Age title ended. 105 is the first Silver Age issue of Flash. The date for the end of the Silver Age varies, but I like to use June 1973, and the death of Gwen Stacy. Last edited by E-Sabbath; 10-13-2009 at 09:00 AM. |

I have the Cerebus compilations from when they were doing 4-5 issues per compilation - I think they cover up through what became the first large bound volume (1-25? I don't have them at hand.)
I've got the first umpteen issues of Hellblazer, a couple of the early Sandman ones, some of the Alan Moore Swamp Thing (I thought I had the whole set but can't find some of them), the full run of individual Watchmen...that's about all I can remember. They're mostly all in boxes somewhere. |

Sigh. I -had- the first Superman / Spiderman cross-over (the huge sized one. I -believe- it was the first Marvel / DC crossover). Bought when new to quiet us kids on a long car trip. Survived until last winter when the apartment flooded and I lost a heck of a lot of books.
