Attending taping of BIG BANG THEORY

OK, I dunno, this maybe should go in MPSIMS, but I thought there’s more people will care here in Cafe Society.

Anyhow, Mrs Haven and I have a VIP pass tonight for a taping of THE BIG BANG THEORY, and we’re very excited!

Oh lucky you! Please report back.

Are you going on oatmeal day, or French toast day?

Ohhhh I am jealous!

Very, very jealous. I’d love to do that.

Wow, that’s exciting. If you happen to run into Kaley Cuoco or Chuck Lorre, please ask them if they plan to reveal Penny’s last name anytime soon. It’s starting to bug me.

Is this where someone says ‘When come back bring pi.’?

Well done, CK. Here, have a chocolate.

This is cool. Which episode number of this season did you get to see? Also looking forward to a report.

Bazzonga!!

Get Raj good and drunk, so he can flirt with your wife.

All right - you have to develop some incredibly distinctive laugh so we can all hear you.

I’ve started doing that to my kids.

They hate it.

Make sure you don’t sit in the wrong seat.

Pretty cool. Tell Kaley I said “hey”.

Just wondering…does it tape in NYC or LA? And I am BEYOND jealous!

It tapes in LA, at Warners. We had a VIP invitation (a friend of my son, whom Mrs Haven and I know, works on the show.) My understanding is that they do have some non-invitation audience on an if-available seating.

There are about 150 people in the audience, with microphones scattered above, so I doubt that any well-distinguished laugh will be heard. I did laugh so hard that I started coughing at one point.

We got there around 5:15, there was some warm-up at 6:00 and they showed us an old episode on the monitors (the one with the killer robot fights.) Then they started shooting, we got to see the gang in The Room, which was very very cool. There were some scenes in the Pizza Place where Penny worked, and a scene in the bedroom. The sets are set across the stage, so where we were sitting (center), we had a great view of The Room, but the people sitting at the far left got to see Sheldon’s bedroom. There were no hallway shots, alas, but we would have seen them if they had been there.

The episode we saw is called “The Vengeance Formulation,” not sure when it will air.

Most scenes were shot two or three times, and we could watch on monitors. Sometimes, they changed the dialog slightly in different takes. We were supposed to laugh at each take as though we were seeing it afresh, which was a little difficult for some of the situations.

There were a couple of flubs, and a wonderful exchange. Johnny Galecki (Leonard) blew a line, and during the interval before they restarted, Kaley Cuocu (Penny) asked him, “Are you high?” and he made the finger gesture for “a little bit.” The audience about exploded. Then a few minutes later, she blew a line, and he pointed at her and said, “High” and we about fell off our chairs. That won’t be aired, you can bet.

Some of the scenes had been shot in advance, we saw them on the monitors so that we had the feel of the continuity.

I won’t spoil any jokes or plot, but there was one moment that may rival the famous Jack Benny “You’re money or your life” (ie, reaction/double-take sort of response) if they let it ride. The laughing just did not stop. I won’t spoil, we’ll discuss after it’s aired, but I swear to you, you will TOTALLY crack up when you see it.

In all, a wonderful experience.

There’s something to be said for the classic sitcom format.

I thought Penny worked at Cheesecake Factory?
