No need for comments, unless you feel so inclined or feel I missed an option.
There is no option.
Edit: And now it’s fixed.
Edit2: You also missed quite a few options, like “All guns should be legal to own, with restrictions for violent offenders and licensing for certain types of firearms,” to name just one.
All guns should be legal is not the only more liberal (in the true sense, not in the “liberals hate guns” sense) option than the current one. The answer “Things are fine as they are,” will vary greatly with location, New York & Chicago being much more restrictive than Wyoming or Utah, and places like Germany and the UK being far more restrictive than the US or even Australia.
Not banned, but we should have much stricter gun regulations
They should be difficult to get, and the right to own them easy to lose. Hunting would not be a good enough reason to own one. Concealed weapons should not be permitted. Guns that are confiscated should be destroyed.
As for the argument that people will just hide them buried in a basement or something I don’t care; guns hidden away are guns that are much less likely to be used.
As it stands now, all guns (or more appropriately all types of guns) are legal to own. The only thing that could really change would be the lifting of the Hughes Amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, which would allow the registration of post-1986 automatic weapons.
With respect to that, I voted for the last choice, All guns should be legal to own, acknowledging that what we have now is perfectly acceptable while noting that legally owned and registered automatic weapons have been restricted since 1934 and have been implicated in only two murders, one of which was a contract killing by a Dayton police officer in 1988. To my way of thinking, that essentially deems the restriction pointless and as such it should be lifted.
I am assuming you mean in the USA? If so- do non USA Dopers vote? (after I already have).
The options are too limited.
I think that we need somewhat stricter ownership regulations including more severe limitations on ownership by convicted criminals. More importantly I think we need stricter regulation, and enforcement, on storage. I would also like much harsher penalties for firearm related crimes, not just violent crime but illegal possession, making threats and improper storage/usage.
You have no category in your poll to cover that, so I didn’t vote.
Hunting wouldn’t be a good enough reason to own one? Then it’s not a right. It’s a privilege.
And there are folks out there who barely get by, and subsidize their yearly income with the meat they hunt.
I don’t think it should be a right.
All guns should be legal to own.
I said things are fine as they are. I was thinking about my area though. I’ve heard New York and Illinois are irritating when it comes to gun ownership.
Total repeal of all gun laws and all drug laws. Let Darwin rule!
you left out my option. Some extream guns should be banned with out proper permits.
I think they should be legal, but that there should be a mandatory safety class in order to get your “permit” to own one. Once you’ve passed the safety class, you should be able to own just about anything.
I’d say make everything legal up to exploding ordinance.
And make it federal mandate that open carry be legal everywhere with only a few exceptions.
I’m tempted to outlaw all handguns, but then I can think of (barely) legitimate reasons for having one. So I voted for much stricter regulations.
Wait, what?
(These guns have been restricted since 1934) + (These guns have only been used in two violent crimes since then) /= Pointless restriction. If anything it indicates that the restriciton has been very succesful in keeping the restricted weapon out of the hands of criminals. What am I missing?
My opinion is skewed now by my job. I never cared about gun control when I was younger, but now that I work in an urban high school, I’d like to find a way to make guns much, much more difficult to get. I voted for stricter regulations.
I’m with Chris Rock on this - all guns legal everywhere all the time for anyone.
Bullets, on the other hand, cost $5,000 each.
Do you mean making guns so much rarer that they simply aren’t there for minors to obtain? We’ve tried that with narcotics. I do think idiocies like leaving unsecured guns around the house where Junior can swipe them should be cracked down on.
If it’s legal for a police SWAT unit to deploy, it ought to be legal for law-abiding citizens to own as well. For automatic weapons, I wouldn’t object to stringent licensing requirements and zero-tolerance penalties for misuse, but all firearms should be shall-issue.
voted “all guns should be legal to own” but in reality I’d say “less restrictive than current laws”
