Ernie Harwell dead at 92

link

The voice of baseball in Detroit, which I frequently heard in my dad's workshop during summers, has died at 92. This is a sad day for Detroit.

For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
the flowers appear on the earth;
the time of the singing of birds is come,
and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

RIP Ernie. Your voice was truly the soundtrack of my youth.

Very sad
A truly classy guy, and an icon of the heyday of a now faded city. But at least he lived a great life, and got to prepare for the end and take care of any business he felt required before he went.
Goodbye Ernie.

He was one of the best. He is also one of my favorite pieces of baseball trivia. The only announcer to be traded for a player. How good do you have to be for that to happen?

One of the local news stations tonight interviewed Sparky Anderson on his friendship with Ernie Harwell. Sparky (who looks ready to die himself) was nearly bawling, in tears. Says a lot about both men.

I have to believe there is no celebrity more universally loved and respected than Ernie.

If anyone wants to bash Detroit - for any reason - my response will be, "Yeah, but we had Ernie Harwell."

Make that have Ernie. He is still with us.

He would walk the stands before the games just saying hello to the fans. I bumped into him a couple times. He was friendly and polite to all.

It seems apropos to quote his farewell after his last broadcast:
Quote:
It's time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I'd much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure. I'm not leaving, folks. I'll still be with you, living my life in Michigan - my home state - surrounded by family and friends. And rather than goodbye, please allow me to say thank you. Thank you for letting me be part of your family. Thank you for taking me with you to that cottage up north, to the beach, the picnic, your work place and your backyard. Thank you for sneaking your transistor under the pillow as you grew up loving the Tigers. Now, I might have been a small part of your life. But you've been a very large part of mine. And it's my privilege and honor to share with you the greatest game of all.
No sir, thank you.

Batters will no longer stand "like a house by the side of the road".
