Have you attended a concert where marijuana was being smoked openly?
I don't know if any concerts even allow smoking at all. I'm watching the dvd of the 1987 Genesis tour and I remember being a shocked 18 year old at all the people at the Orange Bowl in Miami openly smoking marijuana.

Plenty, but as you say, smoking is now largely prohibited at gigs so that makes it a rarer scene than when I were a younger lad.

I noticed it at almost every concert I've been to. B.J. Thomas was the lone exception.
It's the primary reason I don't go to concerts anymore. I just can't stand the smell of it. Well,.... that and the fact that it is too loud and and I am too old. |

Of course. I don't know what kind of concert doesn't have marijuana being smoked openly, but definitely not one I would want to go to.

Quite often, but most concerts I attended were in the Netherlands.

Wow, you mean it isn't done that way now? You've got to remember that most of my concert going was in the very early '70s.

Pot at concerts? Sure, plenty. In smoking prohibited venues.
Hell, I just saw someone the other day smoking a joint sitting in a car in a grocery store lot. The woman appeared to be in her late 30's to early 40's, and was in a new-looking minivan, puffing smoke out the driver's window. I wouldn't have noticed except my car was parked next to hers and that smell is unmistakable. |

When I was a teen, I sold T-shirts, programs and sno-cones at concerts in the Kansas City area. So I say pot being smoked at concerts at Kemper Arena and at Municipal Auditorium.
But neither of those were like the Summerjam concerts at Arrowhead Stadium. I made a ton of money selling sno-cones because I was one of the only vendors willing to actually go down onto the field, stepping over bodies. Half the sno-cones I sold would be without syrup, people paying the price of a sno-cone for the convenience of having ice delivered. Virtually all the people on the field were smoking pot - the cops were cool about. Either that, or the idea of arresting someone in the middle of a huge crowd on the field of a football stadium didn't appeal to them either. |

Hell I was at a concert once where the guy next to me started smoking, in a non smoking arena. Not even 10 feet away was the security guard and when I asked him to tell the guy to stop he just shrugged.
I think that a lot of the metal shows I go to no one smokes openly. In Virginia I think they allow you to smoke in bars still, but can't remember ever seeing it. Then again the places I go to hold like 300 people. |

Dec 2000- Inside concert, Louisville KY, the band was CREED. I asked my friend who took me "Am I smelling what I think I'm smelling?" She pointed to the row in front of us where a joint was being passed, "Yup!"
None of that crap going on in Indy Spring 2001 at the Tori concert we attended! No sirree! AFAIK. |

This. Even though I stopped doing it myself, it doesn't bother me...though at a Smashing Pumpkins concert I did once achieve the fabled contact high.

I think the smokiest concert I've been to was 1988?9? UB40 concert in Hilo, HI. Pop reggae on the Big Island. Oh, yeah. You couldn't see the stage.

Almost every 80s hair/metal band that came through Memphis. Most of them I was of those who toked.
Only one I can recall; can't even remember the band but it was held in The Orpheum. They didn't even want us standing up and the security was so thick you couldn't even get by with a sneak-a-toke. |

Yes, of course. I don't go to that many concerts, but I've definitely noticed pot smoking. FWIW my first concert was in 1994.
As far as tobacco smoking goes, it seems to be permitted at most outdoor venues. I've often seen cigar vendors. Smoking of all kinds is often prohibited at indoor venues, but I've smelled (smelt?) a certain smell at indoor shows too. Last edited by Lamia; 07-24-2010 at 06:47 PM. |

At a Dylan concert in the open-air Shoreline Amphitheater in the Bay Area. The doing it were well over 50. I was with my daughter - there has never been a better anti-drug message than a stoned 55 year-old former hippie.

Well, I've smoked at nearly every concert I've attended, but I didn't do so openly. I always use my sneak a toke pipe. If I'm attending a more upscale, classy concert I smoke before I go in.

It's ubiquitous at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. I joke with my family about how stringent the security is for bottled water and food (you can't bring in any) because they will stop you, yet somehow pounds and pounds of marijuana somehow make it through. I guess it's because they can't legally sell it on the grounds like the water and food.

Where are all these concerts you people saw? I thought I saw it once, but it was actually just a hand-rolled cigarette (and the gentleman put it out as soon as he saw the no smoking sign).

Things sure have changed. The last time I saw Jethro Tull, as soon as the lights went down for the main act, the guy in front of me started fumbling in his pack. He pulled out a baggie, and soon enough, there was that unmistakeable aroma...

All of them. I used to go to a LOT of arena type rock concerts and it was pretty ubiquitous. Name bands playing at bars is another story. A bar is usually pretty strict about smoking weed for fear of losing the liquor license.
I perfected the art of baking pot brownies (cupcakes, cookies, etc.) to get around that. Haven't used pot in any form for years. |

Yes: it was called "Carnivale" and took place on the entire island of St. Thomas in 1976. You couldn't walk down the street without getting high.

I have smoked marijuana openly at concerts. I haven't been to a concert (not counting gigs I was playing at) since the 90's, but it was pretty much normal for the kinds of shows I went to in the 80's and 90's (metal). Security ignored it.

Last November I went to the first concert where I didn't see pot being smoked openly. It was KISS at the Honda Center in Anaheim, which I think is one of the more strict venues about that sort of thing. Plus, I decided to go at the last minute and didn't have time to score any shit. It was much more open at the Heaven and Hell concert at the L.A. Forum, even though that's owned by a megachurch now.
Ironically, the first time I ever saw anyone smoking pot was at a KISS concert in 1979 at the Amphitheater in Chicago. I was ten and with my parents, and we just figured that's part of the atmosphere. |

I've seen and smelled pot at nearly every concert I've ever been to in my life, excluding Billy Joel and Elton John I *think* in 2003.
The heaviest offenders? Dave Matthews Band in 2000(I've actually never seen so many drugs of ALL kinds at a single concert), Ozzfest in 2002, and Tenacious D in 2008.

I've been to concerts where the band openly smoked pot that had been passed up from the audience (Uriah Heep, Winterland, mid-70s, for example).

I think I've been to more Classical concerts where people were getting stoned than Jazz or Rock concerts where people weren't getting stoned. The big difference is that the Classical stoners tend to get high outside the venue and then go in...

I would say most of the concerts I've attended have had it. This includes outdoor venues, and bars, where smoking is prohibited (as previously mentioned). Strangely enough I never went to concerts until after college. The first one I attended was about a year after I was out of college, and it took a while to figure out what that smell was.
All different genres, and there has been plenty of marijuana use. It isn't done "openly", so much as you notice the smell, or see smoke go up from the crowd. This includes shows by Passion Pit, Arcade Fire, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Of Montreal, and Phoenix. (I didn't notice any at Camera Obscura.) Probably the funniest thing to happen was at a Modest Mouse show. They were playing a sold out show at a theater, and it was very crowded even before start, and plenty of people were already smoking. One of the roadies made an announcement along the lines of "Uh, this is a, uh, non-smoking venue, so they just wanted me to remind everyone not to smoke." This was met be a combination of laughter and boos, and then defiant plumes of smoke going up from the crowd. I always notice at least somewhat of a police presence (at least an officer or two) at the shows, but I've never noticed them taking any action or trying to find any culprits. |

Back in the day, at Market Square arena, as soon as the lights went down for the first act, one could see thousands of orange stars moving to the left and right clear up to the rafters. There were actual cloud formations of pot smoke near the ceiling and a general smog everywhere when the lights came back up. Back in the day being '77 - '83.

I saw George Clinton, performing in Amsterdam, at the final day of the Cannabis Cup.
Well, I say I "saw" him, but what I actually saw was an enormous cloud of smoke that emitted the songs of Parliament Funkadelic. I presume George was somewhere in the vicinity of the stage at the time. Last edited by Miller; 07-24-2010 at 11:02 PM. |

Good Lord, when I was in college in the 1970s everytime the lights went off for a concert or film, the joints came out. The one venue where security was tight against it was the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ.
Last time I went to see a concert on campus was for Tori Amos in the mid 1990s. I was shocked (and pleasantly surprised) there was no smoking of any kind. As the National Lampoon "Radio Dinner" album said "If dope smoking doesn't damage the brain, then how come so many teeny boppers think Cheech and Chong are funny"? |
