Anyone interested in a used Kindle 2?

Note to anyone concerned: I did run this thread past the CS mods before creating it and got the thumbs-up to post it.

With the release of the new model of Kindle, I'm sorely tempted to upgrade. That means that my second-generation Kindle would need a new home.

Size (in inches): 8" x 5.3" x 0.36".

Weight: 10.2 ounces.

System requirements: None, because it doesn't require a computer.

Storage: 2GB internal (approximately 1.4GB available for user content).

Battery Life: Read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to two weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly.

Charge Time: Fully charges in approximately 4 hours and supports charging from your computer via the included USB 2.0 cable.

Connectivity: EVDO modem with fallback to 1xRTT; utilizes Amazon Whispernet to provide U.S wireless coverage via Sprint's 3G high-speed data network. Check our wireless coverage map for availability. This expanded coverage is only available for Kindle. See Wireless Terms and Conditions.

USB Port: USB 2.0 (micro-B connector) for connection to the Kindle power adapter or optionally to connect to a PC or Macintosh computer.

Audio: 3.5mm stereo audio jack, rear-mounted stereo speakers.

Content Formats Supported: Kindle (AZW), TXT, Audible (formats 4, Audible Enhanced (AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; PDF, HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion.

Included Accessories: Power adapter, USB 2.0 cable, rechargeable battery. Book cover sold separately.
I'd include the USB cord, A/C adapter for the cord, and the cover I bought ($30)--that is to say, everything that came with the Kindle, plus something extra. The Kindle is in very good condition--I just pulled it out of the cover to look, and I don't see any marks or scratches. I haven't had any problems with the Kindle itself, other than having to do a hard reset once. It's running the latest version of the software--v2.5.6--so it supports all the newest features for the model. The cover is also in decent shape, with the wear you'd expect on something that had been used for a year and a half--no scratches or marks, but the cover has clearly been folded back a lot.

I'd be happy to take pictures of everything, if anybody would like.

I bought my Kindle 2 new in March of 2009 for $360 and the cheapest used ones listed right now are $145. New Kindle 3s are $189 for the ones that include unlimited 3G like the Kindle 2. My asking price right now is $125 for everything, but I'd be willing to entertain other reasonable offers. As soon as I have a confirmed offer, I'd put in an order for a Kindle 3, then ship my old one to you as soon as the new one arrives. Obviously, I wouldn't expect any payment to change hands until the Kindle was ready to go.

Any takers? Any questions? Feel free to reply in the thread (gogo bidding war! ) or in PM.

Mmm. Tempted. Possibly yes. Minor questions. What can this do besides E-books? And can we change the Amazon account from yours to mine?

I'd support a separate "Marketplace" forum here. I wonder if this is fair to other dopers with stuff to sell. I'd love to give them all a voice.

Nonetheless, hope you find a good home for your Kindle! You should try your local paper and Craigslist, too -- you might have a quicker bite that way. I've had great luck with C'List -- almost instant sales, and no shipping hassles!

All big messageboard forums should have their own "Swapshop" sub-forum.

I would have totally bought that last week but I caved and bought a new one (and not real happy that there's a newer version on it's way for the same price!!).

Oh, yeah, hey, Shot, what state or country are you in? This is probably a bit relevant. Oh, and if it's running the 2.3 firmware, it does pdfs natively. Did you update?
I'm interested enough to say 'done deal' though. Provided I can hook it to my Amazon account. Not much use if I can't buy books for it.

Aha, we can.

All formats it can support, either natively or through conversion, are linked upthread. The Kindle also has some MP3 support, though I've never used it. There's a basic web browser that can handle text-based sites (it does best with mobile versions).

Yup, I'll deregister the Kindle before I mail it, and then you can re-register it to yourself. Nothing personal, but I wouldn't want to be paying for your downloads.

My WAG is that the administration doesn't want to do it on a major basis because of liability issues. But maybe if the occasional thread like this one goes well, they'd be amenable to giving it a shot.

I thought about it, and that's where I was going to go if I couldn't get approval to start the thread here. But TBQH I trust Dopers better than people on Craigslist. Too, this way I could make sure I had a buyer before ordering a new one.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. (It's in my profile, but you can't see that from here.)

As I mentioned in the OP, it's been updated to 2.5.6, which is the most recent version.

So that's official, then? Just want to make sure we're in the same country.

Ironically, I'm going to be in Milwaukee this evening (did you know it's cheaper to fly out of "Billy Mitchell Field" than O'Hare?).

But I'm addicted to the smell of old books. So no Kindling for me.

Now THERE'S an app to invent.

Yup, MKE is one of the cheapest airports in the U.S., fortunately for us natives. It's not unusual to hear about flights that connect through O'Hare where it's a couple of hundred dollars cheaper for someone to drive up to Milwaukee from Chicago, get on at MKE, have a layover at ORD, and then continue on to their final destination than it would have been for them to book the same flight, but starting from ORD. The ways of airlines are strange indeed.

I do both. I think I have about 300 books in the apartment as of last count, plus more in storage.

Is shipping included in the $125 asking price? I wouldn't care how it came, UPS Wagon Train is fine by me.

In that case, a Kindle would come under the heading of "saving my marriage".

ps: Grew up in Wauwatosa, and it's nice to see MKE looking like a real airport now.

With A USED BOOKSTORE right in the frickin' airport! A USED BOOKSTORE!

Negotiable, especially depending on how the buyer wants to get it.

Maybe. E-Sabbath was the first to express a solid interest, so I'm waiting for him to confirm.

I've got friends who live in 'Tosa, and my boyfriend's folks live there. (IIRC that's also where he went to high school.)

And yeah, that bookstore is fabulous. Anytime I arrive at the airport with more than five minutes to spare, I stop in and browse.

If E-Sabbath bows out, I will take it. Not sure if that puts me 2nd or 3rd.

In any event, thanks for making this offer to the Doper community.

Yep, we are. It'll take a day or two for the money to get into my paypal. That acceptable?

Let's see. Average stack on a shelf is 15 high... three across, five deep...
got seven of those shelves...

and another three sets of _real_ bookcases, not cubes...

you don't wanna know the numbers.

If it's cool with you, I'd rather just do a physical check--otherwise, PayPal is going to take a cut of the proceeds. Plus, we don't have to worry about the transaction until the new one arrives. (You caught that in the OP, right?) They're currently estimated to ship in early September. Let me know if the timing would be a problem--looks like there are a couple of other interested folks, so no worries here if that would make you change your mind.

If you're still good to go, drop me a PM and we can discuss the details as to payment, shipping, and the like.

Wait... I've seen the Hannah Montana Kindle (a little too sparkly and way too pink, but my daughter likes it), and the High School Musical Kindle...

But you just ordered a Glee Kindle?

PS: Found some great trade paperbacks at "Renaissance Books", and had an excellent pulled pork dinner... all at the airport!

PPS: Graduated from Tosa East in '72, and lived just west of there.

It follows me around spouting dialogue that's too witty by half and bursting into song at inappropriate times.
