I tend to think they'll be grimier looking in the movie. Those are publicity stills.

I find it very interesting how they've managed to make the dwarfs look short, even when devoid of context and my being fully aware they're really all 6 foot actors.

I'm a little said they're not going with the colored caps described in the book. Would it kill these dwarves to add a little color to their wardrobe?

Disney would sue. They have a copyright on the whole "little people in brightly colored clothing" thing.

Very true, but I think The Hobbit is as close to a sure thing as you can expect from a movie.

Oh, I'm quite confident, especially with Peter Jackson directing.

Very short in-seam. Either that or the dwarfs are sagging.

I notice several things in those shots that support this illusion. There may be more, but I'm no expert. 1. The camera's position is shot from slightly above the subject's faces, so we're looking ever so slightly down at them. 2. There is significant empty space above their heads in each shot. 3. The proportions of their clothing is odd and overwhelms them, which I guess serves to make them look like kids bundled in winter clothing: coats at knee or mid calf lengths, ridiculously heavy boots, belts that look 6 inches tall, a scarf that looks inches thick, sleeves big enough for their legs to fit through. Huge hair, also. (And I'd bet those outfits are hot and uncomfortable) |

Add Balin, Dwalin, and Thorin, and we'll have it wrapped up.
BTW, are they pronounced Bah-lin and Dwah-lin, or Bay-lin and Dway-lin? ETA: I always heard it in my head as the latter, but I suspect it is the former. And my ROTK pronunciation guide appendix isn't at hand. Last edited by squeegee; 07-13-2011 at 07:32 PM. |

On the audiobook version I have it's pronounced "Bah-lin" and "Dwah-lin", so that's what I've got cemented in my head.

He has a definite Klingon-ish visage (dunno if that is intentional)-in any event he does look total badass.

I really want to like these Dwarves, but I just don't. They just look... wrong. I guess those in the animated TV movie The Hobbit were closer to my mental image. Hope these new guys are better up on the big screen.

I notice there's a Radagast (I sorely missed him in the LOTR movies, for some reason, he's one of my prefered characters).
At least we won't have dwarves who are mere clowns (I really disliked the way Gimli was depicted in the movie as a "comic relief" character). |

Where did you see that Radagast will appear?
Decipher, with the help of Weta, photographed an actor as Radagast for their collectible card game: http://scrapbook.theonering.net/scrapbook/view/12628 |

Ooh, high detailed video of the Dwarfs. Excellent.
Plus a cameo, or two, from other cast members, new and old. |

Surely this has been mentioned. But I hadn't fully realized that James Nesbitt was playing a dwarf!
One more reason to see the thing.... |

Oh, I did like that cameo! I'm wondering if he's in the movie (yes, his character isn't in The Hobbit, but then neither is Galadriel)...if not, he's a pretty good sport to get into makeup and wardrobe for a five-second appearance.

He is, I think. Besides, I have a feeling that PJ is in England to ease the filming for Christopher Lee. Perhaps the old man doesn't want to fly to New Zealand this time.

Now that I think of it, I seem to remember the possibility of the White Council being in the film(s). So that makes perfect sense.

BUMP
Quint from Aintitcool is embeded in the crew for the current 2 months of filming, which includes Elijah Wood filming his Frodo scenes that come at the very beginning of the movie. Very, very cool. Here is his write-up, which he'll update as his months go on. |

New production video out:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10150451523596807 (I'm sure it will be on youtube soon) Focuses (pun inteneded) on 3D. I'm not super thrilled with 3D, but understand it is a reality for big movies. Interesting that even the concept art is in 3D. Even if you don't like 3D, there is is still interesting stuff in the video Brian |

Kili is pretty hot. Thorin's not bad either.
I just finished watching both Jekyll and Sherlock. I do not see James Nesbitt in that Dwarf outfit at all and I am really happy with Martin Freeman as Bilbo, as Dr. Watson he was somewhat quiet and unassuming but still badass and kind of adorable and that's how I picture Bilbo. |

Best teaser of the latest blog from Peter Jackson: the shot of Bilbo in his bathrobe opening the door and four or five dwarves falling in, a la Fibber McGee's closet.
