Anybody here ever try chocolate wine?
I keep seeing this stuff, ChocoVine, in my area liquor store. It's a blend of dark Dutch chocolate and French Cabernet. On the one hand, I'm intrigued; on the other hand, it might just be disgusting.
Any experiences? Thoughts? |

Chocolate pairs well with wine. It would certainly be interesting. I say try it.

Chocolate makes everything better. Everything.
I gotta find me some of this...

You think so? I thought chocolate was one of the most difficult things to pair with wine. My wife and I received a chocolate wine as a gift -- not the same one as in the OP. It was... different. If you thought of it like a liqueur -- thought really hard -- it was kind of OK. But really, it just seemed like a mistake.

They sell it at Cost Plus World Market, if anyone is looking for a bottle. But I haven't tried it.

Maybe if you tried cooking with it. Like, making coq au vin with ChocoVine?

I tried it. It was meh. My wife--who likes chocolate and wine a lot--agreed with me.
By all means try it and form your own opinion, but I'd rather get a really good bottle of wine (actually, port for me) and a bar of really good chocolate. Or go for broke and get a bottle of Godiva chocolate liqueur. It's more expensive than the choco-wine, but it's MUCH better.

I've tried it. Tastes like Bailey's.

"And in other news, Tully Mars was found lying on the floor in his living room on Thursday morning, in what appeared to be a diabetic coma. Emergency medical personnel said, "We think it's a diabetic coma, but we've never seen someone comatose and in such an obvious state of sexual arousal. And, what's with the grin on his face?" Several empty bottles were found within arm's reach, so alcohol may have been involved." ...

I've not had the Chocovine, but Rosenblum Cellars used to make a "port" to which they mixed chocolate syrup. Strange, but very tasty in a chocolate raspberry liqueur way. They used to call it Danielle, but the current version is named Desiree, for some reason.
Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, as has already been noted, is also very tasty. |

I had some Finger Lakes chocolate wine (it may have had cherries or raspberries in it too; I can't remember), and it was passable. Fairly sweet and not at all classy, but it was balanced and good enough. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, however.

It tastes nothing like wine, or a chocolate liqueur. I think it's closer to YooHoo than anything else. This, depending on your perspective, can be a good thing or a bad thing. Those of you who envision a premium dark chocolate paired with a nice chewy zinfandel will be horribly disappointed. Those of you who think the only thing keeping a glass of chocolate milk and peanut butter cookie from attaining perfection is a little alcohol will be very pleased.

Apparently, as with most things in life, it's a matter of personal taste. I loved it... and I'm not really much of a chocolate lover. I thought the stuff was darn tasty. I have only had it in limited quantities, though. I would imagine that after a few drinks it would start to get a wee bit cloying.

I've wondered this one myself. As somebody who likes YooHoo and Bailey's, I might just have to grab a bottle. I'm a snob, but a snob who doesn't mind slumming with something horrible-yet-delightful.

I got a bottle for Christmas and haven't opened it yet. Are you supposed to chill it first?

I tried a chocolate wine from a Virginia vineyard - Rojo Xoco from Horton Vineyards. It's not bad - quite sweet, so it's definitely a dessert wine. Tastes a little like a Tootsie Roll. I'm not a huge fan, but it was something different, so I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Chocolate wine?
does it not occur to anyone here, that OBVIOUSLY, to perfect it, one must add BACON??? Jeez, do I have to do all of the thinking here?

We sell a metric buttload of it at my store. Taste like Bailey's. In fact, we keep a bottle of it in back (both the chocolate and the raspberry) open for sampling. If someone is on the fence about it, hell, if someone even picks up the bottle out of curiosity a sample get's them to buy a bottle better then 75% of the time, and probably two bottles more then half the time.

I will grant that dark chocolate goes well with a robust red wine (even though I'm not a big chocolate fan).
However, I feel compelled to point out that burgers go really well with beer, but there is no way I would ever try a beefy beer. The choco-wine sounds way too reminiscent of "It's a floor wax... AND a dessert topping!" |

For a while we sold a beer called "Pizza beer" it was beer brewed with (literally) tomatoes, basil, garlic and oregano. The beer snobs all said it was garbage, if they even bothered to try it, but personally, I didn't think it was that bad. When it was ice cold, it was subtle enough that you almost didn't notice it (but it was still there), once the beer warmed up a bit, it really wasn't that bad.
Burger beer...probably wouldn't try that though. |

We have a shop here that sells local beer & wine (by "local" I mean "made in my state"). They have a deal where they sell you a bottle of chocolate wine and a bottle of raspberry wine. The object is to mix the two equally by-the-glass as a sort of wine "cocktail".
A friend of mine ordered it, and I tasted it. Now, I'm typically not in favor of sweet wines (I prefer a full-bodied dry red or hearty white), but the flavor sensation was...interesting. Kinda like a chocolate-covered raspberry. |

I've tried it. I liked it. Tastes like Bailey's. Haven't tried the raspberry yet, but it's on my to-do list.

Well, I was at the liquor store yesterday, and broke down and bought a bottle. They had chocolate, chocolate raspberry and chocolate espresso. I started out with the plain old chocolate. While I was there, I also bought a bottle of whipped cream-flavored vodka. After dinner, I put two parts chocolate wine and one part whipped cream vodka into a cocktail shaker with ice, shook it thoroughly, and poured it into an on-the-rocks glass over ice. It made quite a tasty dessert.
This is not a wine I would try to drink with a meal, but I'm definitely interested in trying it as an ingredient in more drinks! |

I've seen it, but have easily resisted any temptation to get it. I can't imagine it would be good (even though I agree that chocolate and red wine can go very well together).
Here's an interesting related abomination -- one liquor store near me is selling vanilla wine. I'm not even tempted. |

We tried the chocolate wine, liked it, bought a bottle and drank about half…but I admit the other half’s been languishing in the refrigerator for a while. It’s just very strong. About half a glass is all I might possibly want at one time.

I've thought about mixing some with some coffee liqueur. That might be tasty. Or espresso vodka.

We've tried Chocovine. Wine = good. Chocolate = good. Together = meh.
We finished the bottle, but would never buy another. |
