I’m looking for a blanket / category term for written works (or possibly art in general) that are read and enjoyed largely for their reflection of the unusual psychology of their authors.
The “core” examples I want to include would be things like Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap labels, the Unibomber’s manifesto, the Time Cube website, and Henry Darger’s In the Realms of the Unreal. These tend to be marked by unusual use of language, especially reliance on nonstandard definitions and tendency for rambling and exclamations.
Outlier examples might be something like Mein Kampf, which I think is nowadays mainly read from a viewpoint of historical / psychological interest (or rubbernecking).
I don’t want to include work that’s simply of the “so bad it’s good” genre, unless it really indicates something fascinating or unusual about the creator. So, if we were including film, Plan 9 probably wouldn’t count, but Glenn or Glenda? might.
