Anybody NOT feed their dog wet dog food?

I’m fostering a dog for my mother who runs a rescue shelter. (She’s reached her limit for the amount of dogs she can legally hold.) I finally got her house broken.

The thing is tho’, empirical evidence seems to suggest that wet dog food gives her the runs. And when she gets the runs, she doesn’t wait to go outside. She’ll go right there in the house. So I have since stopped feeding her wet dog food.

I feel so guilty tho’. Wet dog food is one of the few things dogs have to look forward to during the day.

Anybody got any suggestions? I’m currently feeding her Pedigree.

Thanks for any input.

My dog doesn’t get canned food - he gets Science Diet kibble. He still does the happy dance when I grab the bowl and head for the garage, though. It’s been my experience that dogs may sulk a bit if their diet changes, but they get used to it in a few days.

I’ve never given my dog wet food and he seems happy enough.

My dogs have always been happy and healthy and they have always been fed dry food.

I do admit to occasionally give them special treats or selected table scraps from time to time.

BTW: I wonder if anyone else has experienced their dog having explosive gas and runs after being fed some KFC leftovers?

I don’t feed my dogs wet food and they are perfectly happy with kibble. Also, Pedigree is not high quality dog food. It isn’t that Chinese crap that killed dogs either, but there are better choices. Kirkland (I think that is Walmart) makes a higher quality dog food at a reasonable price.

You can switch to kibble, which is also better for teeth and gums, and supplement with a nice treat daily.

All my dogs have had a constant diet of kibble (Pro Plan.) As yet, none have turned on me.

We don’t feed our dogs wet food 98% of the time-- any time we do, it’s a treat or we were given some high-end wet food as a “hey, your dogs might want this” from the in-laws.

Have you tried other formulas? One of our dogs thrives on fish formula dog food only. Anything else as a regular food gives her the runs.

Our dog does not get wet food. He gets dry kibble + one “muttball” a day. The muttballs are new to his diet. He’s been dry food only for years.

To save you the link hassle, a muttball is a fancy meatball for dogs. It’s about the size of a golf ball and has real cooked meat and veggies, and is fit for human consumption.

My dog got dry food (Purina/Purina One large breed) her entire life. She was happy (and fat). I miss her.

My dog LOVES his dry little balls of dust. When he hears that little bowl getting filled up, he is all spins and bounces of delight; as if he is getting the absolute BEST, most delicious delicacy known to the canine species. :stuck_out_tongue:

My dog gets kibble twice a day, with occasional dinner scraps. Sometimes we wet his kibble down with water and a half a spoon of gravy powder.

He’s had actual wet (tinned) food approximately four or five times in his life.

FYI, Kirkland is the house brand at Costco.

I can’t remember ever meeting a dog who’s fed wet dog food. None of mine ever have.

Nope, our dog eats Science Diet. Our cats get both wet and dry food (except for Maggie who won’t even LOOK at dry cat food), but the dog gets exclusively dry food.

My dog is ten years old and she’s only eaten Canidae dry kibble.

My dogs (6 of them presently) all eat kibble. Sometimes I’ll split one can of dogfood between all 6. I think kibble is better for their teeth, it’s cheaper, and they like it. Feeding time isn’t nearly as exciting to them as when I come home from work.

Costco’s house brand is actually pretty highly regarded (dog food analysis). Science Diet and Pedigree are rated 1 star, Kirkland is rated 3 stars.

My dog gets half a small can of Pedigree, and 1 cup of dry Blue Buffalo. She usually saves the dry for a morning snack.

Thanks for that link. My dog’s food gets 5 stars! (6 is the best.)

Our dog gets dry Blue Buffalo with wet food only as an occasional treat.
Give the dog a kong filled with treats if you feel like she’s missing out. I’ve yet to meet a dog who doesn’t love a kong filled with treats.

Only critter on the place that gets gushy food is the toothless very geriatric cat, who is tiny and barely eats anything [I think she might weigh 5 pounds soaking wet…] everything else gets kibble and suppliments with whatever they can catch. My shepherd/husky mix is very adept at catching chipmonks and birds. And I think I have the only cat that is allergic to mice, every time she eats one I find mousy cat hurk in the livingroom.
