Lyrics question

In the song “Splish Splash I Was Taking a Bath” what does the phrase " long about a Saturday night" mean? The grammar doesn’t seem right to me. This has baffled me for some time.

“On [a] Saturday night.”

I’ve checked 3 different lyrics sites and they all say “long about…”. Still confused:confused:

It’s not “long about” it’s “'long about” as in “along about” meaning “around” or “approximately.”

Exactly. See, for example, “Long About Midnight” (1948) by Ray Brown, or “Long About Now” (1962) by Fred Hellerman.

Just to emphasize others’ responses, 'long about is a colloquial expression, present in some American dialects, meaning, as others have said, “approximately on.”
