Merrimints!

Gosh, I miss them.

The sad story of the demise of Merrimints

Yes! Now I'm sad.

I miss Campbell's Cream of Vegetable soup. Not for the soup, but because it made a great sloppy joe when mixed with crumbled ground beef. Chicken Gumbo is almost as good, but not quite. The other cream soups don't work nearly as well.

I also miss Mallo Cups -- chocolate shaped like a cupcake with marshmallow cream filling -- but I'm told they're available on-line.

My son's favorite cereal is the yogurt burst Cheerios (vanilla most, 2nd strawberry) and I can't find either flavor of them lately. He likes Kix and Cookie Crisp ok but not as much.

Diet Pepsi Twist was my favorite beverage of forever. They briefly brought it back a couple years ago as some sort of tie-in with football season, but then it was gone again.

A while back I interviewed someone for a sales position who previously worked at Pepsi corporate, and I spent an unfortunate amount of time complaining about the discontinuation of Diet Pepsi Twist

These have both been mentioned, but I have been incensed for several years by the lack of Pudding Pops in the world. I get mad every time I call my little son a Puddin' Pop and I flash on Bill Cosby hawking those things and getting me addicted all through the '80s and now NO PUDDING POPS.

The other one is Apple Newtons, and strawberry too, or whatever other flavors they had. I still buy and eat Fig Newtons, but I really, really miss those apple ones.

Aw, I miss those Lemon Coolers. They tasted of summer. Girl Scouts in California sold something that looked like lemon coolers this year, but you got something like a dozen cookies in a $4 box. Nothing like the powder sugar coated bulk box!

I miss Aspen soda (clear, apple flavored) and Jello 1-2-3.

I see moon pies (Entemanns?) on the shelves of stores all the time here in Upstate NY, both chocolate and vanilla glazed. There's a no-name brand that I'm told tastes like mothballs in the Real Deals dollar store. I've seen Quisp cereal in a local grocery store just last month. Stuff is around, just not everywhere and not all the time. They say, ask your grocery store to order whatever, but it's been months and there's still no Blue Jolt or Stewart's Key Lime soda on the shelves, just the same old same old....I've been looking for Piel's Beer, it was here last summer, now it's disappeared.

Also: sorbet. It was The Thing for a while. I believe it's ridiculously easy to make, so maybe I shouldn't complain too much.

Anyone remember those candy necklaces? Candies strung on a snug elastic band, and you could chomp on them all day long, staining your neck with sugar, saliva and sweat? Good times.

"Edge 2.0" It was bottled water with a caffeine kick = 1 cup of coffee. It tasted like the smell of the NJ Turnpike, (sort of burnt tires + diesel exhaust for the uninitiated) but it was a great way to kick-start my day without upsetting my stomach or getting bad breath. I used to keep a flat of them in the trunk of my car and grab one on the way to work each morning.

Yes, I can grab a glass of water and a caffeine pill instead, but it's not the same somehow. . .

Ah, yes! And if your hair was just the right length, it was almost guaranteed to be shorter by the end of the day: string and sugary tangles are so much fun! (I'm guessing that 98% of candy necklaces were purchased by non-mothers. The few times I remember having them, either I bought for myself, or my father or older cousin did. Mom always said no, and when I spotted them at the Dollar Tree a few years ago, my own thought process went "Cool, haven't seen these in years -> no way in hell am I dealing with the mess my daughter would create.")

Kath94, I'm told that a small brand has revived Lemon Coolers, and that they are or were recently available at Dollar General. I haven't bought any, because I'd eat a whole box if they're truly the same.

I used to love crystal pepsi for some reason. And this juice in norway called 'Skogsbær Jus', forestberry juice. Both disappeared in the nineties. By the way, anyone know how to get a can of Beamish?

Oh, and first post.

Mission brand macaroni and cheese. It had the best bright orange powdered cheese, way more flavor than Kraft.

Mixed with horseradish it makes the best cocktail sauce.

Buttermint Life Savers? They were like a milky green color? I LOVED THOSE.

You can achieve a similar flavor profile by eating a butterscotch hard candy and a starlight mint at the same time

Candy necklaces AND bracelets are still available in the bulk foods of some grocery stores, like Wegmans.

Apple, fig, strawberry, and blueberry bars (similar to Fig Newtons) are made by Daddy Ray's and readily available in the Dollar Tree, though not all flavors at all times, they switch them up.

And also in the Dollar Tree there are boxes of lemon cookies with powdered sugar I've been meaning to try. Next time I go on a mini-spree there,,,,

They sell them here at the old fashioned candy store. I was going to offer to mail you some but they are way cheaper online. At the candy store they are about $2.00 for a pack of two!

I'll third the Pudding Pops. My grandparents always had a box in their big chest freezer for us kids. The variety pack, with the chocolate, vanilla, and swirl. As the oldest kid I was the only one tall enough to reach into the freezer without falling in, so I would be the one passing out Pudding Pops to my little cousins.

My lips would always stick to the darn things though. I would inevitably lose a piece of skin while trying to eat one.

As we discuss this thread, my dad is remembering a place on the waterfront in Santa Barbara, CA, ca. 1963 that served broiled abalone steaks. They were dark meat, sort of like tuna steaks, sort of like a poor man's filet mignon.

Anyway, he thinks abalone isn't served anymore because it's a} endangered or b} food for something endangered. What's the deal?

Quisp: I see it regularly at The Fresh Market. If you have one of those nearby, you may want to give it a shot.

Moon pies are ubiquitous around here. Mallo cups are fairly easy to find --- they're in a lot of convenience stores. If you're jonesing for the chocolate/marshmallow combination, apparently North Carolina is the place to be.

I really liked the apple newtons, but for a brief time, they also had cherry newtons. Those were incredible.

I used to love a cereal called NutriGrain. Its ingredient list was pretty much 100% whole wheat. It tasted great, and was a very healthy cereal. Of course, they dropped it. I complained to Kelloggs, to no avail. When they reintroduced "new, improved" NutriGrain a few years later, they notified me, but they had ruined the cereal. It had a long list of ingredients, didn't taste as good, and wasn't as healthy.

And I don't remember the brand name (Morton's?), but when I was a kid (late 60's), there were frozen cinnamon sugar mini-donuts to reheat in the oven. They were heavenly. If they were still around, however, I would probably weigh about 600 pounds.

Russell Stover's Honeysuckle Straws. Crunchy candy sticks in lemon, lime, and cinnamon..similar to 'reception sticks' but bigger and thicker and not dipped in chocolate. I miss these like crazy. Also, Russell Stover Rosebud mints. Sigh.

Abalone is still available in some restaurants but most in the U.S. seem to be located on the West Coast. According to the Wikipedia page it is endangered in the wild and is generally farmed for commercial use. It is also pretty pricey these days on a menu. At this restaurant in Newport Beach an entree of abalone is $76. Kinda high for a giant sea snail but it is supposed to be delicious.

When I was a kid I loved Good n Fruity. They had a hard candy shell and a fruit flavored licorice center. They went away for a long time and I couldn't find them, even online.

One day a few years ago I was shopping and saw them and I was beside myself, I was so excited! I bought every box they had in case I wasn't able to find them ever again.

They were awful!! Not as in, now I am an adult and my tastes have changed awful, just awful. The coating was mushy and grainy and soooo sweet, and the licorice center is now sort-of...jellyish? Just heartbreaking.

They sell them everywhere now, and every time I see them for a split second I'm like then

I definitely remember the hot ketchup, and no, it wasn't chili sauce. Good stuff.

My submissions are:
Count Chocula. You can sometimes find it around halloween but that's it. I try to stock up if I see it, but I really wish it was available year round again.
McDonalds "ranchero" quarter-pounder. Anyone else remember this? It came out in the late 80's IIRC, and had a small flat crispy tortilla on it (not replacing the bun) and a spicy sauce that I remember as being similar to taco bell's hot sauce. I'd probably think it was shite now, but back in the day that ranchero QP was my favorite McDonalds item.

OMG... Wheatnuts are still around?? Sure wish they were available locally!

Another I thought of... bacl in the late 70's or early 80's, McDonalds dabbled in...pizza. They had a bacon cheesburger pizza for about $5 that was EXCELLENT! Wish they still made it.

Hardees also made really good fried chicken for a while in the 80's...

Kellogg's Concentrate cereal. I think a single serving was only 1/4 cup of the cereal, but I used to fill up my bowl with a "regular" size portion, pour on the milk, and wait for it to get soggy.

I loved that stuff.

Hubster misses the Mountain Bar candy bars. Same shape as Cherry Time but with a vanilla cream filling.

That's why (as I'm sure you recall) they changed them to Jolly Olly Orange and Choo Choo Cherry.

I never drank Funny Face -- they were artificially sweetened (except for a very brief period, apparently) and tasted weird.

The Politically Correct switch also gave us Fritos spokesman W.C. Fritos in place of the Frito Bandito.

I was going to mention Fizzies, but apparently they are back. Since they are now sweetened with Splenda, instead of the original cyclamates, they won't taste authentically vile and I'm not interested. The fun of Fizzies was watching them fizz, not drinking them, but mom/dad made you drink them anyway because_dammit!_they had paid good money for them.
