I’m looking at moving to the private sector (from education) and am applying to sales and customer education/product training position. I’m wondering if Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com are at all useful these days, or will I just get spammed like crazy if I post my resume to them?
Yes. You get lots of emails from headhunters. And, some spam. Not to mention a daily list of possible jobs.
It is hwaaaay better to have them contact you than for you to apply. Your chances go up by a factor of 10.
LinkedIn is also good here.
However, in order to get the best offers, you need to make sure your resume has the right keywords, and is well done. Spend the $200 to get it professionally done. Trust me.
Thank you. Do you have a recommendation of a resume writing service? I’ve had mine scored by RezScore.com, and they offer a writing service, but I’m not sure of the quality.
I’m in the middle of job hunting after a RIF, and I’ve found Monster to be surprisingly useful (looking for high level Executive Admin positions) - the spam has been minimal, and I’ve gotten good responses in both applying for positions and from employers calling me. I’m not sure about paying to have a professional done resume - I did do a lot of research myself, and at least for me, it was fairly straight forward.
Monster does a decent job, actually. Also, there’s very likely some hungry pro on Craigslist that will include a face-to-face and maybe even a mock interview.
In todays job market you need every edge. Get a pro.
Note that you will get about one scam a month about “starting immediately”, etc, it will be for one of those wire transfer services thats is a scam.
