I'm guessing that when in a 'normal' situation, crawling over and fighting it out with the other kitties probably provides a natural burping opportunity.

way to go!!! that is a fighter kitty right there! the fiestier the wee one, the better chance they have.
for malenka's first litter box i used the container from stouffer's mac and cheese. just plain clay litter, no clumps. she started using it between week 2 and 3. she looked like a wee bear cub at the time. it is amazing at how much more they can do day by day. then comes the big change. it seems like over night they go from being a bear cub to a wee little kitten! with kitty cat mittens instead of bear claws, and puffy little kitten whiskers. i have a good feeling about this wee one. oop, forgot. the cutest funniest thing is when a kitten this size gets hiccups. so funny, and the force of the hic really scoots them. On another (now defunct) board, one of the members raised a kitten from still-wet newborn to maturity and followed her progress on-line. You can still see the posts and pics at www.tammew.net. Great pics and probably some good advice too!

She is 11 days old today - and I am certain now of the gender! She is still a feisty little brat who complains constantly when she is awake. After all I've done for her and all she does is complain! I guess I can't blame her at all. Life has been a bit brutal for the little scrap...
I was concerned this morning 'cuz it seemed like she was making more 'snorty' type noises and it seemed like one of her eyes might be a bit weepy. I was afraid that she might be getting a respiratory illness, which could be the kiss of death for her. Taking her to a vet at this point is not an option. Even if I could throw vast sums of money for her care, which I can't, I'm afraid to expose her to the risks of travel, becoming chilled and exposing her to other animals - its too big a risk, she needs to hang on for a few more weeks before that is a viable option. But when she woke up for her next feeding, she seemed fine. No more snorting (perhaps she had just been eating too fast, or kitty hiccuping, or...well, I don't know...) Her left eye is looking a little more slitty than the right and I think both eyes should open before the end of the week. No more signs of weepiness, so she may have just had a bit of milk smearing her tiny face. I hope... She is now going longer between feedings, sometimes as long as five hours, but she takes more time per feeding. She nurses longer and more often when she is awake. But she still sleeps most of the time. Since her sense of smell is probably becoming more developed by now, I have taken to throwing whatever t-shirt I was wearing the day before, into her box with her when I put her down for her nap, hoping that the scent that she associates now with food will comfort her. I think it must help, 'cuz when I check on her she is curled up sleeping on my shirt. Yes, I burp her...yes, I wipe her little butt to encourage elimination and then clean up the nasty results! (you wouldn't think anything that small could produce something so stinky, but - oh, yeah - and just like with a human baby, you think, this is a good thing!) I give her a few minutes when she is awake to just crawl around on the bed, but she tends to abuse this privilege and constantly scale blankets and pillows, seeking, seeking...what? Her momma? Her littermates? They are not to be found, but she never stops seeking... I put a couple of rolled up socks in her bed and she does seem to buddy up to them, so I will leave them there - anything that mimics the environment that she 'should be' in, can only be a good thing. Now, I am worried for myself. 'Cuz I'm selfish and I want to avoid pain. Because she is far from being out of the danger zone, and I have become...attached. In spite of my resistance, I have an emotional attachment now - and I totally did not want this! I wanted to stay unemotional and aloof and rational, and, yes - do what I needed to do, but without emotional involvement. I was sure that I could maintain this, at least while her eyes were still sealed closed! (not sure why that makes a difference...) But, if she dies now, and I have to be realistic and know that this is still a good possibility...I think my little grinch heart may just break... |

Anyway, I don't blame ya. It would be more than a wee bit sociopathic of you not to feel a bit of a bond after all the time you've spent together. Sending what I hope are oodles of good luck and good health in your direction. Oh, and I'm sure letting her crawl and climb around as much as is safely possible is good for her developing muscles and joints. |

I'm not going to say nothing can go wrong at this point, but your chances are good that the Little Complainer is going to be complaining for a while. Kittens who have never nursed from MommaCat were always the most difficult for me to raise successfully - and I damned near raised kittens for a living for about 10 years. Between working in a vet's office, managing a shelter and running a feral cat TNR/rescue, I had kittens more often than not. You have done very well. I'm proud of both you and Little Fighter!
Of course you're getting attached; I don't see how you could spend as much time as is required for her care and NOT get attached! It's been my experience, backed by several vets, that "bottle raised kittens is the weird". I don't think they completely realize that they're not human or that you're not a cat, expecially if there are no littermates. But it's a good, fun weird. Diet tip which stood me in very good stead: get some plain active yogurt and mix a bit into her formula. It helps with digestive enzymes and makes the poo a bit less stinky. What color is she? Have you been taking pictures? I can't wait to "meet" her. I know she's not completely out of the woods so all appendages are crossed. Hard to type like that, too! Thank you for being such a good kitty mommy! Last edited by SnakesCatLady; 05-23-2012 at 04:42 PM. Reason: It's the cat's fault. |

I have a few pics - perhaps someone more internet savvy can pm me and I can email the pics for posting? I'm not trying to be deliberately obtuse - I just don't have an internet pic site and I'm too distracted right now to try to set one up. Well, the truth is, I'm just not as smart as I like to think I am and I have been too lazy and too unmotivated up til now to make any attempt! Seriously, if someone who can host pics wants to pm me, I will send what pics I have... |

Sorry for the delay - it's been a busy weekend and when I have been on the computer, I've had some issues staying connected...
Anyway, super kitten is now two weeks old and still alive and well - I hesitate to say 'thriving' because it may jinx me! But she is still vocal, still active and still a fuzzy little butterball! One eye has opened and the other is trying to... I'm keeping this short, lest my connection drop out again - but fingers crossed, everything seems to be going well! Thanks for your interest and concern...

Anyway, kitten is now 17 days old - both eyes are open! I was a little concerned that she was late in opening her eyes since the first did not open until she was 14 days, which seems late according to most of what I have read on the net. (And, no - the ER vet gave me very little info about hand raising kittens, said he didn't have any handouts and advised me to 'google it'.) However, I also read that long-haired cats tend to open their eyes later than short-haired cats, so maybe...maybe she's going to be long-haired?? Maddie was short-haired, and I'm not sure about Billy Bob, the most likely sire at this point (since I only saw him once or twice, briefly and didn't really notice his coat length, not sure if it matters, could be a recessive trait?). Or maybe she was just delayed because of her unfortunate start in life?? As far as a name, she has rather unofficially been called 'Banshee' - as in, she would vocalize so loudly every time I picked her up for feeding that I would say, 'Geez, chill for a second, you little banshee!' Well, that and the whole 'harbinger of death' thing that banshees are all about... So for now at least, we have been calling her Banshee. When she was blind, she was a total reckless maniac, belly crawling her way to the edge of the bed at breakneck speed - I was continually saving her from crashing to the floor! But now that she can see a bit, she has become much more cautious and much more curious and has slowed down in her explorations. She really is amazing! She squeaks, squalls, crawls and climbs over pillows and blankets - she is fearless! After the death of her littermate, I remember telling my brother "I don't think that she will last long enough to use up the kitten milk I got from the vet." I am happy to report that I was wrong - I have had to replenish that supply! She has now reached the point where she spends more time crawling around, exploring and questioning her world than she does nursing... She is a warrior. She continues to amaze me. |

I once named a kitten I was bottle-raising "Heathen Buzzbutt the Yowler" for similar reasons. Then there was the litter of 7 who were collectively referred to as "The Terrorists".

I want those things (well, at least the leg climbing and earlobe suckling). But then I think of how Luna would react to another cat being brought into her well-ordered domain, probably by peeing on our stuff, and I realize I can't have another cat.

I also liked the picture of Maddie with her baby - what a pretty cat she was! She had a very friendly and sweet face. Banshee looks like she might take after her mom in looks, too. Glad to hear that she's doing so well. I read somewhere that the first kitten that gets born in a litter is often the biggest and healthiest one, due to the placement of the placenta (more bloodflow) and I wonder if that played in Banshee's favor. |

progress report...
little Banshee is almost 3 and a half weeks old now. My sleep schedule is almost back to normal! She sleeps longer, and has gone as long as 7 hours between feedings. She eats faster now and fills her little belly up quicker - more awake time is spent crawling about on the floor and exploring...every once in a while she manages to lift her little butt and her little milk belly up and actually take some steps on her back feet instead of her elbows!
![]() I have already made her a little litterbox, a lid from a cardboard box filled with plain clay litter. I didn't expect her to use it yet, but wanted to get her to associate the litter with elimination, so I would put her in it, while wiping her little bottom to encourage her to pee. Much to my surprise, she finds it fascinating and the day after I started to doing that, she went into the box on her own and promptly produced a little poop! I thought it was just a fluke but she has done it a couple of times since - I am encouraged! I have heard that bottle fed kittens can be weaned earlier than their mothered counterparts, so today I mixed up some canned Wellness kitten food with her KMR to make a little gruel. She has no interest in it yet (other than to walk through it!), but I now dip the bottle nipple into this gruel before feeding her, so she will start to recognize it as food. At least now, when she does take an interest, the taste and smell will mean 'food' to her! Thanks again to all of you for all the 'good vibes' you have been sending out to the little scrap! I will upload a few more photos of her with her eyes open as soon as I can... |

My kids have been funny. My daughter has told me from day one - 'you're keeping her - if she survives, you have to keep her!' I tell her, 'I dunno...I really can't afford another pet...I may have to find her a home...' And my son (who brought me Maddie when she herself was just a kitten - and is now serving in Afghanistan) says 'I'll take her! I don't care if (GF) is allergic! She can take a pill - I want kitty!' My son has always been a 'cat person' - I even have a pic of him at nine months old, sharing a bagel that he'd been teething on, with a kitten. Actually both my kids have always been more oriented to cats than dogs, although I have had both. So...I have an old dog crate in the garage, a big one since I used to have a boxer! I have been thinking that I should dig this out, wash it and use this for the 'kitty containment center'. That way, I can put her litter box in with her and she will be safe enough that I can let my dog back into my room again, without worrying that the dog may be too rough with her. My dog has been very despondent, since he has not been allowed into my room since kitty was born, and he used to be with me always! Now, he just lays in the hall outside the closed door to my room, all mournful and depressed... |

You may have to wait until she's a bit bigger to use the crate; she probably could go right between the wires of a crate right now. And if she can, she WILL...

We did something very similar with a dog crate - even poked two holes in an old Tupperware container so we could clip it to the site for a water bowl (cuts down on spills/tracked litter). It works very well, but be sure Banshee is big enough so she can't get her head stuck.
