Resume Writing Service?

As I posted in this thread, I'm looking for a new job and (now, after DrDeth's comments) want to use Monster and/or CareerBuilder in combination with my LinkedIn profile.

DrDeth also suggested a professional resume writing service. I've only heard of the services associated with the aforementioned sites, plus RezScore.com. Do you have any experience using any resume writing service? What do I need to look for? How do I choose? RezScore has the advantage of helping to rewrite my LinkedIn profile if I so choose, so I'm leaning toward them. At about $350, it would be an expensive mistake to make, though.

$350 is not crazy, if they do all that. Have you tried Criagslist?

You can READ a lot about resumes, and then check out "examples" and find one close to your personal information. Plug your data in, change it around, try different styles.

You might look for resume critiquing services instead.

Honestly, most HR folks pay more attention to your COVER LETTER than the resume. If the cover letter doesn't pass muster, the whole shebang gets filed in the circular file.

I'm sorry, but I've got to say that if you are a literate person, you should not be paying a dime to someone else to write a resume. It needs to be simple and clean. With so many examples floating around on the web there are plenty of styles and formats to review.

Write something up and show it to a friend or coworker if you have one you can trust. As long as you have no typos, have accurately summed up your positions, duties and skills, you should be all set.

Networking is how you get a new job. Yes, a great cover letter and impressive resume helps, but the only thing that matters is how you present yourself to others.

Except that cover letters aren't searched by headhunters and their search bots. If you resume has the right words they are looking for , they will contact you, and that increases your chances by ten times. Also, unless specifically requested, some HR dept will toss any resume that comes in with a cover letter.

Wrong. Look, first of all, as I said, headhunters and recruiters send out their search bots to look for resumes with certain terms and words. You need those or else your resume won't get found in the first place, even if you hired a Pulitzer Prize winner to write it, and you have the best quals in the world.

Next- in the current economy, the job market is very competitive. No matter how qualified, you need a edge. Now yes, networking, like with LinkedIn and your old college buddies, etc, is the best. But sometimes you have no network to what would be a great job.

DrDeth, thanks for asking! I used my personal network to get an interview with a company back in Michigan. I'm expecting to hear back from them tomorrow (Friday), and I expect it to be positive. They flew me in for a face-to-face interview a couple of weeks ago, and I felt really good walking away from that.

I'll post more when I hear back from them. I did get my resume professionally written by a local writer (I found her through the PARW website), but I got the resume from her after the interview with the company.
