That is what David Carradine died of. He was found hanging in the closet of a hotel in Thailand. He went to Thailand to Bangkok and ended up well hung.

It's customary, when starting a thread, to provide a link to the column in question. Saves searching time and keeps us on the same page. In this case, I assume, it's this column from 1988: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/...c-asphyxiation

Cecil doesn't usually update columns, unless there's a compelling reason (such as the column being published in a book.) My guess is that a celebrity falling victim isn't a compelling reason.

Interesting column. I think the title of de Sade's Justine, in the second paragraph of Cecil's answer, should be italicized.

And David Carradine is not the only noteworthy victim of such a mishap: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erotic_...n#Famous_cases

I suppose just holding your breath wouldn't work? I'm going to pass on self-experimenting.

Tangentially, when did it become usual to refer to the Marquis as simply "de Sade"? Surely Cecil knows that's not a surname, right?

Well, da Vinci just gets referred to by title, and (around Chicago, anyhow) so does da Bears.

Not by Cecil, he doesn't:

Of course, the artist is just "Leonardo", and the full "Leonardo da Vinci" is used on first reference in each of those columns. The Marquis' actual appellation, on the other hand, is considerably less well known, and this was a one-off reference. Still, a puzzlement.

Well, in missing my edit window, I am forced to leave my error on display. The latter two of my three links were Staff Reports, not missives from The Master.

Still, The Master does opine on the topic briefly here: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/...-vinci-code-em

I'm sorry but as someone who practices bdsm, both with a partner and alone, I feel the use of "bondage freak" in the article was offensive lots of folks practice safe and sane and consensual bdsm of all types daily often without the "vanilla" folks knowing a thing. the victims were idiots for placing them selves in danger while bound with no one to help, in other words idiots , but bondage has nothing to do with that
