Loss of a music legend: RIP Chuck Brown

DC Dopers should head out tonight to celebrate the life of Chuck Brown: Father of go-go, the quintessential DC sound.

(Didn’t know DC had a sound? Ever pass a bucket drummer with an infectious groove that was unlike anything you’d heard before–yet you now recognize it? Thank Chuck Brown)

Chuck Brown

I’ll be playing all my go go LOUD tonight.

Dang. I’m not a big go-go fan, but I’ve gotta give him respect. He created a sound unique to DC, and is a local icon. Seemed like a pretty decent guy too. RIP.

Oh no. Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers, right?

I had a roomie who loved his stuff, so I got exposed to it out in California. Really fun and funky.

Oh, no. I never got to see him live. He played pretty regularly, and I always figured I’d catch him next time.

And (just to work my own obsessions into this thread) if Chuck Brown hadn’t existed, we would never have heard Eva Cassidy’s version of “Over the Rainbow”, since that first appeared on their duets album (which wasn’t all duets).

How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb?

None! They have a machine that can do that now!
