Actually that was what I was implieing in my self deprecating joke...that I would look bad by comparision And I was leaving an opening for anybody else to say I didn't need any "help" to do that in the first place

The label's smudged. It's either nectar re-engineered to give immortality simply by skin contact, or sulfuric acid.

Really? Are you sure it's immortality you long for and not simply a ridiculous amount of longevity? Because I'm pretty capable of amusing myself but I suspect that after the 10th millenium, even I will run out of things to do. We can't count on Netflix to be around forever, you know.

I think it says that it gives "immorality. " This wouldn't happen if you could take the time to wipe the baby blood off your fingers before handling the damned vials.

Well in real life it's not a problem because we can make a visual distinction by looking at their face.

If there was only some way for the software here to allow for a virtual 'face' for posters this name issue would probably never come up.

That's not safe enough. Anyone with an "e" in their name should be banned. Just to be extra safe.

For the first time since I was named, I am very happy that my folks moved to Earth.
Gagundathar is a very common name back home.

I would truly hate it if somebody showed up here named Gagoondathar.
You may laugh but it happened in grade school on the voyage here.
I was very glad that the other person wasn't coming here to live.
That was especially true since the other person was a female. Talk about confusion.

You're right--that can be a problem. I have a first and a second cousin, both named Dick. We are constantly having to say, "Big Dick or Little Dick?" Little Dick hates it.

I'd have to say that you are very unacquainted with what this community believes. This has been the case forever. For one thing, it's an obvious trolling technique to make your name look like someone else's. And, yes, in real life, when you have two people with the same name, you start calling one or both of them by another name, by a nickname. If you have both a Robert Kelley and Robert Kelly in the same room, you will likely call one of them Bob. And why? Because, otherwise, people will get confused.

This is not some horrible occurrence that justifies starting that weird libertarian streak that seems to randomly strike otherwise non-libertarian posters.

I find it entirely plausible that two people came up with these two similar names. "Even Steven" is a very common phrase and it's not that odd that two people would come up with a play on that phrase.

Nothing has happened to the community. This kind of thing comes up once in a while. Usually it's handled quickly behind the scenes, and this time we have a thread about it instead. I appreciate that even sven doesn't mind the similar name and I didn't think she would, but it's more about the possibility that people will get confused than about the idea that someone is infringing on even sven's made-up SDMB name. You could probably argue that we have not always stepped in to prevent these kinds of similar names in the past, but this isn't some kind of new trend.

I'm not saying it's absolutely the case, just that it's plausible.

But I can play this game too... Have either of them said that they didn't base their name on that phrase?

Should we outlaw any mention of the Shia LaBeouf vehicle as well, lest someone thinks we're actually talking about Even Sven or Even Seven?

Ironically, there isn't a user named Even Steven (or at least a well used one). So that means at least two SDMB posters had to chose a username that was too clever by half

Please. Ren Stevens was my idol growing up. I question the idea that either even sven or even seven are based off that phrase. There's no joke that's evident when you think of the usernames in conjunction with the phrase, no obvious witticism rears its head, nothing funny emerges if you say it fast or without thinking. The usernames are clearly based around something that's relevant to the user but not necessarily in the public consciousness. Even seven is awkward enough to look like it's a variation of even sven and I don't know about others but I haven't noticed even seven doing much besides insulting people and following even sven around. Not the behavior I'd expect of someone with honest intentions.

I've been thinking even seven is a play off the fact that seven is an odd number rather than even. The word "seven" itself also contains an odd number of letters while "even" contains an even number of letters. In other words, it may be intended as a dichotomy, sort of like "dark as day."

You have a very absurd concept of the word "clearly". There have multiple posters here making the same connection - it's not a stretch to think that "even Steven" is the source of the names. But whatever- it's not that difficult to wait for clarification from either poster for a definitive reason.

They don't need to. It's beyond obvious. They'd have to be pretty dense to come up with it on any other basis and not realize immediately it would play that way to nearly everybody.

:raps knuckles on Stickler's head: The reference to "even Steven" is it. Plus Sven is a name. Maybe they have something else private going on, that doesn't matter unless they want to talk about it.

And tell me you don't think this phrase originated with Ren Stevens.

Even if even sven was a riff on even steven, that doesn't even mean that even seven even considered even steven first. They may even have based their name on even sven with no prior knowledge of even steven. However, even sven may not even have intended to riff on even steven and they may even have meant 'even' in the sense of including, perhaps unexpectedly, as opposed to 'even' as in winding up with the same amount of something when all transactions are complete. Even 'even' is subject to interpretation before we even consider sven, seven, or steven.

"even sven" comes from a high school inside joke (I was a teenager when I registered here.) The origin is pretty dumb- basically it stems from a botched doodle that looked like it said "even sven" and I made up a whole hilarious-to-teenagers backstory for. Even Sven was a viking who hated the French, because I hated French class, you see......

Not very interesting, but not related to "even steven." The thought never really crossed my mind.

I'm not particularly amused with seven rash of contradicting whatever I write, but it is what it is.
