Movies you know are bad, but still watch/enjoy

Just to be clear, I am NOT talking about movies “so bad they are good” for the comedic effect.

I am talking about movies that you just know are not well written, have bad acting, bad effects, plot holes, etc but for some reason you simply enjoy in the way the director intended.

There are two for me:

Event Horizon - sci fi turned sill horror, but for some reason I really enjoy it.

Van Helsing - Cannot explain what I like about it… not a big vampire fan but its entertaining.

Independence Day. It’s not good. It’s almost bad. I enjoy it every single time.
Twister. We have cows.
Krull. Mainly because I watch it with my 11 year old grandson. I wince at the Cyclops’s makeup everytime.

A Stranger Among Us, the movie where Melanie Griffith (I can’t stand her!) goes undercover in the Chasidic community in Brooklyn to solve a murder. I can’t help it. I love this movie and I’ve watched it a zillion times. It gets a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Checking the user name, I see you’re not my husband. We hated hated hated it in the theater, but still end up watching it at home maybe once a year or so. I think it’s partially mourning what it could have been before partway through the film it takes a sharp right turn into “we need a rewrite / hey I just saw Hellraiser” land.

Point Break. Lori Petty is yummy. And it’s got some good Concrete Blonde music.

I’d go with Independance Day and Point Break.

Buckaroo Banzai is right up there as well.

Gasp! Buckaroo Banzai is not a bad movie! Turn in your Blue Blazer Irregulars badge! (Okay, maybe it is, but I can’t get enough of Lithgow’s performance in that.)

Bloodsport. I hate the genre, I hate Jean Claude Van Damme, the acting is atrocious, the script is weak, yet somehow it doesn’t get turned off. I’m guessing some sort of chemical imbalance.

2012. Full of plot holes and too many near-miss escapes, but darn if I don’t enjoy it every time.

The Nicholas Cage version of The Wicker Man. Best unintentional comedy in years, IMO.

The Day After Tomorrow. Trash, but I love it, and will almost always watch it when it’s on.

Hudson Hawk
Megaforce
Casino Royale(the original)

Seconded. I love “disaster” movies, the more ridiculous the better. I will never not laugh at downtown L.A. being destroyed by tornados.

Center Stage is another favorite. It has every ballet dancer stereotype/cliche in the book, and the ending ballet set to a Michael Jackson song is just a riot.

Thirded. Those “tornadoes” are the worst effects ever.

Also Lake Placid and Dante’s Peak and any of the Scary and Police Academy movies.

I’ve never watched those movies in one sitting, but whenever they’re on, I’ll watch for awhile.

Two words : Kate Beckinsale

Maybe it’s besause you watch it on the TV. Lower expectations from that medium. I know that I hated Speed 2 in the theater, but I almost enjoy it watching it at home on the TV.

Lori Petty definitely WAS… now, not so much :dubious:

Asian Anal Sluts VII

Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I know the story and pacing and costumes are lame, but seeing Kirk and company back in action after such a long hiatus was such a thrill; seeing how great they all looked back in 1979 still is, albeit a sad one. With all its flaws, I believe it’s a much better movie than most people give it credit for. I would like to see the director’s cut sometime, since I hear it’s much better paced, and the whole focus of the story shifts to Spock finally coming to grips with his human half.

Clash of the Titans (1981). Tacky, tacky, tacky, but it beats the 2010 version by a mile. Harryhausen’s special effects may be dated, but they’re so much more charming than CGI, which really does nothing but try to overwhelm you. And seeing that cast in action (Olivier, Andress, Smith, Meredith, Piggot-Smith, Phillips, Bloom, et al … and yes, even Harry Hamlin) makes me want to weep for the current generation of “stars.”*

*And the naked chicks were cool, too!

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I never would have believed I’d enjoy a really, really dumb movie about a couple of total morons, but I laughed myself silly. Maybe it was the historical figures/time travel aspect of it … and any movie George Carlin agreed to appear in couldn’t have been that bad.

Not at all surprising that I should have loved Beavis and Butt-Head when they came out a few years later.

Basically the same comments apply to Dumb and Dumber, though the underlying theme was “buddies on the road” instead of “history/time travel” (and there was no George Carlin :frowning: ).
