Does anyone remember this movie?

For some reason this film has popped into my mind and it’s bugging me that I can’t remember details or who was in it.

It was a drama, and iirc a TV movie made in the '70s. A man (college professor, I think) decides to take up a new identity and pass himself off as a regular joe. He gets a job in construction and falls for a waitress at a diner. Eventually she learns the truth and is angry and hurt that he lied about who he was.

At some point one of his co-workers is buried in a collapsed trench they’re digging and the main character performs cpr after they un-bury the guy.

I don’t recall how the film ended. Help me, straight dope, you’re my only hope.

There was a movie with the dad from the Waltons, who abandoned his high(er) class life, and took up with a gum-snapping waitress. It sounds like a comedy, but I don’t think it was.
