Family Bought New House, New Oil/Gas Inspection Question?

My family bought a house in brooklyn. The previous homeowner used a type of heating/gas oil… im not sure exactly what it is but it had to do with pipes i believe where we had to replace because it cost a lot of money per month for whatever was there in monthly bills. My family told me the person who helped us with this said they helped us apply for something… it was something such as with the new york department of building but my family wants to know if the department of building in nyc received it or not. I know my question sounds very confusing and it is b/c im not really sure how to explain it b/c my family asked me to check online as they gave me the website of

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/home/home.shtml
They told me the person said this is the site to find the information to see if our application went through or not and to see if we are on the waiting list. Does anyone know what im talking about? They also told us the basement of the house… they said someone was going to come and inspect it and said someone should come within a few months but still no one did. At the moment our basement is not clean etc, no new carpet etc because we waiting for someone to come first before we fix it all up.
Does anyone know what im suppose to do on this website? They just told me that person who helped them said you can find the info on this website but again im not even sure what they asking me to look up.

Anyone know anything about this? Family told me that the person who helped with some repairs of the house said go at that link to find the information but again i have zero clue what im looking for.

Basically after you buy a house, there has to be someone that comes and inspects the house right? How do we know when that person will come and the other thing is does anyone know what the person helped us with the repairs applied us for? I know its something with the heat/pipes etc because our monthly gas/electric/heating bill for that 1 month when we were there was over 1k before we bought something new or changed it to something else for 1500 dollars or so…

Pauly, Not nearly enough info to help you.
Your house could be heated by oil, gas, electricity, wood, or several other things.
The right answers will be found by calling a heating and air conditioning repair service. They will come to your house and be able to answer all of your questions.
Good luck.

Your family sucks if this is the level of information they gave you and expect you to give them an answer. Come on man, we know less about this than you do, and you sound impatient that know one has responded to you.

Did you try putting your building’s address into the “Buildings Information” query search thingie?

I’m not sure about the regulations in NY, but from what I can tell the OP’s family needs either a permit from the city for the repairs to be made or an inspection of the repairs by the city so the repairs can be accepted.

I would expect the person actually doing the repairs would take of this for your family, but it appears they did not.

Call the Brooklyn customer service number listed on that site and ask them.

Certificate of Occupancy maybe?

Okay this is what im told.
Family wants me to ask nyc building department if there is a permit on file for us to switch from oil to gas heating. the person who changed our heating system apply for one and we want to make sure that he did. Want to know if any inspector will come to home soon to check if done correctly. we also applied for two gas meters. When can we put in the additional gas meter.
Where in the website am i suppose to find this information? Am i suppose to call them or could i check this myself?

FFS, just call them and ask. They know the answer, you have their number. WTF more do you need?

You can try here or call 311 to get in touch with the City Government.

If you can’t bother to even consider the suggestions made so far, why not just give us the property owner’s name, the building address, etc. and maybe someone here will do it for you.

Can someone tell me what is the phone number for the brooklyn one? Im looking at the site and cannot find it.

On the left side of the screen there is a link that says “Contact the buildings department”. Ponder for a moment, if you can, what sort of information such a link might reveal.

Post back if you need instructions on how to click on that link, or help dialing the number.

In any case, the HVAC contractor must be able to provide you with the permit details. Call the contractor and ask to see the permits they got from the city.

I called the brooklyn phone number. They then give me a bunch of other numbers. i called the one and it didn’t work.

Clearly, this message board is the right place to complain about that.

[speaking loudly and slowly]DID YOU TRY ANY OF THE OTHER NUMBERS?[/loudly and slowly]

Yes i did, all of them either went to a voicemail that is full or it gave me other numbers to call and i called those.

You can wait a long time to get an inspection. Your gas is probably supplied by Con Ed or National Grid, you can call them about information. You would need permits for the conversion and gas meters I think, so ask the contractor for the permits if you didn’t get them yourself. If you can’t get things resolved call your local assemblyman and ask him [del]how you can contribute to his campaign[/del] if he can help.

So i called them and they told me i have to call the LICENSED MASTER PLUMMBER something with LAA. They said all the information is on the website, called the numbers and none of them are it.

Just call any licensed plumber/HVAC contractor, preferably a reputable one. (Ask your neighbors or real estate agent for a recommendation if you don’t know one.) Ask them to visit the house, evaluate the plumbing and heating systems and tell you about the licensing requirements.
