The Temperpedic matress is advertised fairly heavily on TV, radio, and in print. Say its different from all others. They ask you to call in for a sample of the "space age" material, and claim some sort of endorsement (or acknowledgement) by NASA.

OK Dopers... anybody got any experience with this bed? Is it truly more comfortable and provide better sleep, etc.? What about cost? How does it compare to department/furniture store bedding sets?

My matress is showing its age and wear, and I'm thinkin' its time to retire that on which I retire. By the way, I haven't called them, I have an aversion to high pressure sales.

I just saw the infomercial for it last night, and boy, did I want to order it for the free 90 day trial!! I really wanna know how much it costs. I saw a pillow made from a similiar material in this intelihealth (sp) catalouge my mother gets, and it was going for $150. FOR THE PILLOW!!! I can only imagine how much the mattress would be.

If this is the same bed that they have at Brookstone, and from the description, it sounds like it is, it's the most fucking incredibly amazing material a matress has ever been made from. Get thee to Brookstone and test it out. The only problem is that it's insanely expensive. But, god, is it comfortable.

I bought one of these 3 years ago after doing the trial (and I've had a lot of back problems for a while). I can say that for me, despite putting a massive hole in my bank balance, it is damned wonderful. I found that I move lot less in the night and consequently sleep better, and my wife has found the same thing too. Back feels not 100% better, but better than before. It did take a short while to get used to it though - it just feels so weird sinking into it.....you don't get that same bounce during sex either.....

Warning - the material stays warm for a long time, but also can retain the cold for a long time. If it gets really cold (like when we turned the heating right down to go away for Christmas), it becomes extremely hard and takes ages to warm up again.

I also found that I had to put some extra slats on the bed, since they are very heavy and made the frame creak a fair bit.

Tempupedic did, as advertised, come out of the Nasa Technology Transfer program. Check it out:

I believe the material is used on the Space Shuttle for cushioning against lift-off and other high-G situations.

My brother has the neck-supporting pillow, and JMHO it is awesome.
