Predestination: New Heinlein movie has been made [edited title]

Predestination, based on Robert Heinlein’s short story “All You Zombies”, has been made in Australia. It stars Ethan Hawke, and has gotten a 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far. Is anyone else looking forward to seeing this?

I dread watching Ethan Hawke in anything these days. I suppose it’s my fault for not turning off that loathsome pile of dreck he was in called, The Purge. Did like him in Gattaca, though. So I’ll probably see this movie when it turns up on Netflix.

I’d be curious to see how he looks as a woman.

Yeah, after seeing and liking Gattaca, I’ve been impressed by how poor an actor he is in each subsequent film I’ve seen him in. I guess some actors need a director to help them.

Have you seen Boyhood?

Interesting. Doesn’t seem to be widely accessible yet. I am not heartened by the tagline as reported by the Wikipedia entry, though.

It looks as if Hawke plays the viewpoint character as we’re introduced to him in the story (the bartender), and a woman plays the female analogue in a separate story thread. Also looks like a 30-minute Twilight Zone episode padded out to 97 minutes…

It’s weird that some articles I’ve seen about the movie (such as this one http://www.blastr.com/2014-9-24/ethan-hawkes-twisty-time-travel-flick-predestination-gets-new-trailer-release-date) doesn’t mentioned being based on “All You Zombies” at all.

The writers and directors of this movie are Michael and Peter Spierig. They also wrote and directed Daybreakers, which was, I thought, a pretty interesting vampire movie. (And it also starred Ethan Hawke.)

I just watched both of the trailers made so far for the film. They both quote the main character saying the line at the end of the story that serves as the source for the title - “I know where I come from, but where do all you zombies come from?” It’s true that that article linked to in Andy L’s post doesn’t mention the story, but it appears that the basic plot is kept. The filmmakers add some extra things though.

Even the extra things seem consistent with the original story - as I recall, there are references to a Fizzle war in the story, so a plotline involving fighting a “Fizzle bomber” makes a certain amount of time.

I’d surely love to see one - just one - Heinlein-based movie made with some love and respect for the material.

How was the “Jerry was a Man” production on “Masters of Science Fiction” (I missed that episode?

P.S. I’d love to see an hour version of “And He Built a Crooked House”

Perfect, except that they got nearly everything backwards. (Jerry proved himself to be a man… by lying.)

Haven’t read the short story, but I liked this movie. We argued about the plot a bit afterwards, but in the end, I think it held up. The music was great.

The short story is one of my favorite temporal-paradox stories ever, so I’d like to see the movie… some time.

I’m surprised it hasn’t been incorporated into a Star Trek movie. Yet.

Is it not out yet in the US? That would explain the lack of discussion. It’s a movie I think a lot of Dopers would like. Hopefully you guys get to see it soon, and come talk about it. I wonder what the Heinlein fans will think of it.

Not available on Netflix Streaming, or on Netflix DVD.

Here’s the release schedule (so far) given on the IMDb:

As is typical for movies that aren’t real blockbusters, it started by appearing at five film festivals in order to get some word-of-mouth going among critics. It’s an Australian production, so it got its first release in theaters in that area. It’s now been released in Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Thailand. Trailer #2 says that it’s scheduled for release in the U.S. on January 9, 2015.

Thanks for the heads up. I don’t really remember the story, but I do like time travel movies.
